There is no fixed minimum bank balance for a US student visa from Pakistan. You must show readily available funds for the first year cost printed on your I-20, and a clearly identified, reliable source for every later year. Bring original bank statements or bank books, and if a parent or relative is paying, their tax records, income proof and evidence of your relationship.
How much bank balance do you need for an F1 visa from Pakistan?
The number you need is already on your Form I-20. Before issuing it, your university must check your evidence of funds. The I-20 then shows two blocks of figures:
- Estimated average costs: tuition and fees, living expenses, costs for any dependants and other items, for one academic year (or the length of the programme, if shorter).
- Student's funding: where that money comes from, split into personal funds, funds from this school, funds from another source and any on campus employment.
A hypothetical example: say your I-20 shows estimated costs of $48,000 and a $10,000 scholarship under "Funds from this school". You then need to show the remaining $38,000 as readily available money, plus a believable plan for later years. Dependants on F2 visas raise the total.
Your bank balance will be in rupees. Know its dollar value at the current rate, because the officer will compare it with the dollar figure on your I-20. Our guide to the cost of studying in the USA from Pakistan breaks down typical fees and living costs.
What does the visa officer check? The 9 FAM 402.5 test
Consular officers follow the Foreign Affairs Manual. For F1 students, 9 FAM 402.5 says you must have enough money to study without needing unauthorized work. It then sets a two part test:
- Year one: you must show "readily available funds to meet all expenses for the first year of study", usually through credible documents.
- Later years: the officer must be satisfied that money for each additional year will come from the same source, or from other specifically identified and reliable sources.
You do not need cash for the whole degree, but "readily available" is the key phrase for year one. Money in a savings or current account counts. Money tied up in a plot, a house or a business you would have to sell does not.
The manual also tells the officer to:
- resolve any doubt about whether the sponsor can really afford the support;
- weigh why the sponsor is paying, noting that a close relative is more likely to honour the commitment than someone unrelated;
- check whether funds can leave the country, where support comes from outside the US. Be ready to explain how the money will reach your university, for example by bank transfer of tuition.
Funds are one of five requirements, and failing any of them leads to a refusal under section 214(b). See our post on reapplying after an F1 refusal under 214(b).
Which bank documents should you bring in Pakistan?
The USTravelDocs student visa page is clear: photocopies of bank statements are not accepted unless you can also show original statements or original bank books. In practice, that means:
- Original statements on bank paper, stamped and signed by the branch, for the student or sponsor whose money it is.
- Original bank books or passbooks, if the account uses one.
- Fixed or term deposit certificates. The official guidance names fixed deposit certificates for sponsors. If a deposit has a lock in period, know when it matures.
- A balance certificate. Many Pakistani banks will issue a letter confirming the current balance and how long the account has been maintained. People often call this a maintenance letter. It is a useful extra, not a replacement for statements.
How many months of statements? There is no official number, but a longer history shows where the money came from. Universities may set their own rule for the I-20; the University of Illinois Intensive English Institute, for example, wants statements no older than six months from the semester start date.
Sponsor documents: parents, relatives and the affidavit of support
Most Pakistani students are sponsored by a parent, some by an uncle, an elder sibling or a relative abroad. The officer wants to see the relationship, the money and the income that built it.
Proof of relationship. The official guidance gives a birth certificate as an example. A NADRA Family Registration Certificate (FRC) is useful because it lists family members in one document.
Tax records. The guidance asks for the sponsor's most recent original tax forms. In Pakistan, that means income tax returns filed with FBR through its IRIS system, the wealth statement if filed, and the sponsor's NTN. A sponsor who appears on FBR's Active Taxpayers List shows a filing record.
Income proof.
- Salaried sponsors: recent salary slips and an employer letter showing annual salary. Study in the States names an employer letter as accepted evidence.
- Business owners: business bank statements, NTN, registration papers for the business, and tax returns that match the scale of the business.
- Rental or agricultural income: rent agreements, land records and evidence of the income actually received.
Affidavit of support. There is no official State Department affidavit form for F1 applicants. The Embassy says that, apart from items such as the I-20, it has no fixed list of supporting documents. Your university may ask for its own sponsor affidavit or letter before it issues the I-20. Bring a copy, but remember that a signed promise carries weight only when the documents behind it support it.
Property, loans and scholarships
Property. A house, plot or agricultural land shows family standing, and rental income from it can be an ongoing source for later years. On its own, property is not readily available money for year one. If you sold property to fund your studies, bring the sale deed and the bank record of the payment.
Education loans. The manual says an existing student loan can satisfy the first year requirement, but the mere intention to obtain a loan is not enough. Bring the bank's sanction letter showing the approved amount, terms and disbursement plan. A loan application that is still "in process" will not help at the window.
Scholarships and assistantships. If your university awards funding, it appears on the I-20 under "Funds from this school" and reduces what you must show. Bring the award letter, and know whether the award renews each year and on what conditions.
How do you explain a large or sudden deposit?
A large recent deposit is likely to draw questions, because the officer must be satisfied the money is really yours to use. The answer is a paper trail:
- Sale of property or a vehicle: sale deed or transfer papers, plus the bank credit on the matching date.
- Gift from a relative: a signed letter from the relative, their own statement showing the transfer out, and proof of relationship.
- Matured deposit or savings certificates: the certificate and the bank credit when it was paid out.
- Business income: the business account statement showing the transfer, consistent with the tax return.
Never park borrowed money in an account to inflate a balance. USTravelDocs warns that fraud or misrepresentation can lead to permanent visa ineligibility, which is far worse than a refusal you can recover from.

Common mistakes that hurt F1 applicants from Pakistan
- A balance that does not reach the I-20 total. After scholarships, the readily available amount should cover the first year cost.
- Income that does not match the balance. A modest income on tax returns next to a very large, recent balance raises questions.
- Not knowing your own numbers. You should be able to say what the first year costs, who pays and how year two is covered. Practise with our list of F1 visa interview questions.
- Altered or borrowed documents. Misrepresentation can make you permanently ineligible.
At Via Nova, counsellors review the financial file with the family before the interview: whether the documents match the I-20, whether the source of funds is clear, and whether the student can explain it. Learn more about our USA student visa service. Only the consular officer decides a visa.
Frequently asked questions
How much bank balance is required for an F1 visa from Pakistan?
There is no fixed amount. You need readily available funds equal to the first year cost on your I-20, after any scholarship from the university, plus a reliable source for later years. The figure therefore depends on your university, programme and city. Bring original statements or bank books showing the money.
How many months of bank statements are required for a US student visa?
The Embassy does not set a number of months. What matters is that the officer can see the money is available and where it came from, which a longer history shows better. Your university may set its own rule for issuing the I-20, so check its international office requirements.
Can my uncle sponsor my US student visa?
Yes, a relative other than a parent can sponsor you. The officer must be satisfied that the sponsor can afford it and has a good reason to keep the commitment. The manual notes that a close relative is more likely to honour it. Bring proof of the family link, the sponsor's tax returns, income proof and bank documents.
Is property accepted as proof of funds for an F1 visa?
Property can support your profile and, through rent, your later years. It is not readily available money for the first year unless it has been sold and the proceeds are in the bank, backed by the sale deed.
Do I need an affidavit of support for an F1 visa from Pakistan?
No official affidavit form is required for an F1 visa. Your university may ask for its own sponsor affidavit or letter before issuing the I-20. At the interview, bring the sponsor's evidence: relationship proof, tax returns, income documents and original bank statements.
