For an MS in Computer Science in the USA, Pakistani students usually need a 16 year bachelor's in computing or a quantitative field, a CGPA around 3.0 or higher, and an English test. Several public universities no longer require the GRE, but some still require it from international applicants. Most programmes take 30 to 36 credits, usually 1.5 to 2 years. Computer Science is on the STEM list, so graduates can apply for up to 36 months of OPT.
Who is an MS in Computer Science in the USA right for?
An MS CS fits you if you hold a BS in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a close field and want deeper skills in areas such as machine learning, systems or security. It also suits engineers and maths graduates who have strong programming, as long as they meet each university's prerequisites.
Go in with a clear specialisation, a realistic two year budget, and a plan that works even if US work rights change.
What are the entry requirements for Pakistani graduates?
Each university decides, but the patterns are clear:
- 16 years of education. Arizona State says you must have the equivalent of a four year bachelor's degree, and a year of a home country master's can count towards it. A four year BS gives Pakistani students 16 years. With a two year BSc (14 years), read our guide to 14 year degrees for a master's abroad.
- A computing or quantitative background. UT Dallas asks for a degree equivalent to one in a quantitative science, with two semesters of calculus and linear algebra, and gives levelling courses to non CS graduates. Arizona State lists calculus and discrete maths.
- CGPA. Georgia Tech gives 3.0 out of 4.0 as its desirable minimum. Arizona State asks for 3.25 in your last 60 credit hours, and UIC's catalogue says 3.50 on the same basis.
- English. Department scores can be higher than the university minimum. Georgia Tech's MS CS asks for TOEFL 100 (5.0 on the new scale) or IELTS 7.5, and does not accept Duolingo. Buffalo, Arizona State, NC State and UT Dallas list IELTS 6.5.
- Statement of purpose, CV and recommendations. Our master's in the USA guide explains each document and the Fall 2027 timeline.
Can you do an MS CS in the USA without the GRE?
Yes, at many universities. This is the position each one stated on 14 October 2026:
- Not required: Georgia Tech ("A GRE score is not required"), Arizona State and the University at Buffalo.
- Optional: UT Dallas, which still gives advisory scores if you submit one.
- Required for international applicants: NC State says "The GRE is required of all international masters applicants", and UIC asks international MS applicants for at least 300 combined in Verbal and Quantitative, with at least 140 in Verbal.
Georgia Tech adds that a GRE score may help if your degree is not closely related or your application has weak points. If your CGPA is modest, a strong Quantitative score is still worth having. The GRE costs $249 for test takers outside China, from 1 August 2026.
Which affordable public universities offer an MS in Computer Science?
"Best" depends on your field and budget, so this table shows facts, not rankings. These are public universities that publish tuition for international graduate students. Costs are per semester, and you normally need two semesters a year.
| University and programme | Length | GRE | Fall deadline | Published cost per semester |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Georgia Tech, MS in Computer Science | 30 credits, typically within 24 months | Not required | 1 February | $16,540 tuition at 12 or more hours plus $758 fees, Fall 2026 |
| UT Dallas, MS in Computer Science | 33 credits minimum | Optional | 1 May | $18,266 at 12 credits for 2026 to 2027, plus $95 per credit engineering fee |
| University at Buffalo, MS in Computer Science and Engineering | 30 credits, 1.5 to 2 years | Not required | Priority consideration 15 December | $14,914.86 a semester, the general graduate rate at 12 credits for Fall 2026, before the international student and course fees |
| Arizona State University, MS in Computer Science | 30 credits | Not required | 1 December | $22,067 a semester, the general graduate rate at 12 or more hours for Fall 2026, before any programme fees |
| NC State, Master of Computer Science | 31 credits, often three semesters | Required for international applicants | 15 December, fall entry only | $21,750.75 total at 9 or more hours, 2026 to 2027 |
| University of Illinois Chicago, MS in Computer Science | 36 credits | Required for international applicants | 15 January recommended, 15 February final | $14,063 base plus $2,474 engineering differential, before fees, Fall 2026 |
For a rupee picture, Buffalo's $14,914.86 is about Rs 41.3 lakh a semester at the State Bank of Pakistan weighted average offer rate of Rs 277.1072 per dollar on 13 October 2026. Your I-20 adds living costs on top. Our guide to the cost of studying in the USA shows how the I-20 sets out these figures.
Most deadlines carry no year, so confirm each on the programme page. Buffalo's pages give different fall dates, so apply by 15 December.
Can you get an assistantship or funding for an MS CS?
Sometimes, but plan as if you will pay. Departments are open about this:
- UIC: all computer science graduate applicants are automatically considered for funding, which can be fellowships, assistantships or tuition waivers.
- UT Dallas: applicants are considered for teaching assistantships with no separate application.
- Georgia Tech: master's students are not guaranteed funding but often receive it once they work with a faculty member. The college does not offer financial aid to students entering the programme.
- Arizona State: teaching assistant positions go primarily to PhD students.
- NC State: says Master of Computer Science students normally pay their own way.
- Buffalo: the department's funding page describes support for PhD students only.
You can also work on campus for up to 20 hours a week during term on an F1 visa. For the visa, only funding written on your I-20 counts towards your first year.
Can you work in the USA after an MS CS? STEM OPT explained
As of October 2026, an F1 graduate can usually get 12 months of OPT. Because Computer Science is on the DHS STEM list, you can then apply for a 24 month STEM OPT extension, up to 36 months in total. USCIS sets these conditions:
- you must be in a valid period of post completion OPT;
- your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify and sign a Form I-983 training plan;
- you file Form I-765 up to 90 days before your current OPT card expires;
- you can be unemployed for up to 150 days across the whole OPT period.
Arizona State marks its MS CS as eligible for the STEM OPT extension, and Buffalo calls its programme STEM approved. Ask your school to confirm the official code on your I-20.
Longer term work usually means an employer sponsoring you for an H-1B, which Via Nova does not arrange. Three changes matter. The H-1B lottery has favoured higher wage levels since the FY 2027 season (DHS final rule, 29 December 2025). A proclamation requiring a $100,000 payment on certain H-1B petitions for workers outside the US was extended on 18 September 2026 to 21 September 2027, although a federal court vacated the guidance implementing it on 8 June 2026 and that case is on appeal. A $103,265 fee on every cap subject H-1B petition was proposed on 25 August 2026 and is not final.
What do computer science graduates earn in the USA?
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports these medians for May 2025:
- software developers: $135,980 a year;
- computer and information research scientists: $140,300 a year, a job where a master's degree is the typical entry requirement.
These are national medians for all workers, not starting salaries.
What should you know about the F1 visa?
Once you accept an offer, your university issues an I-20 after checking your funds. You pay the $350 SEVIS fee and the $185 visa fee, complete the DS-160 and interview in Islamabad or Karachi. Be ready to explain why you chose your specialisation and what you plan to do afterwards, using your own projects. Our USA student visa requirements list every document.
A DHS rule ending "duration of status" was postponed by a federal court on 14 September 2026, and the government appealed on 30 September. F1 students keep the current rules, including the 60 day grace period, while the case runs.
Via Nova's counsellors, in Lake City Meadows (Ex State Life) next to DHA Phase 5, Lahore, and online, help with shortlisting, I-20 checks and mock interviews through our F1 visa service. Only the university admits you, and only the embassy issues visas.
Frequently asked questions
Can I do an MS CS in the USA without the GRE?
Yes. Georgia Tech, Arizona State and the University at Buffalo do not require the GRE for their MS in Computer Science, and UT Dallas makes it optional. NC State and UIC still require it from international applicants. Check every programme on your list for the Fall 2027 cycle, because rules change by department.
Is a 3.0 CGPA enough for an MS CS in the USA?
It can be. Georgia Tech gives 3.0 as its desirable minimum, though most admitted students score higher. Arizona State asks for 3.25 in your last 60 credit hours, and UIC's catalogue gives 3.50. A strong GRE, projects and recommendations can help a borderline CGPA at schools that look at the whole file.
Do MS CS students get assistantships in the USA?
Some do. UIC considers all CS graduate applicants for funding, and UT Dallas considers applicants for teaching assistantships automatically. Georgia Tech says master's students are not guaranteed funding, and Arizona State gives teaching posts mainly to PhD students. Budget for full costs and treat any assistantship as a bonus.
How long is STEM OPT for computer science?
Computer Science is on the DHS STEM list, so after 12 months of OPT you can apply for a 24 month STEM extension, up to 36 months in total. Your employer must use E-Verify and sign a Form I-983 training plan. A DHS proposal of 8 October 2026 would add OPT fees, but it is not in force.
Which is the cheapest university for MS CS in the USA?
There is no single answer, because costs depend on credits, fees and city. Among the six public universities above, Buffalo's general graduate rate was $14,914.86 a semester for Fall 2026 at 12 credits, before its international student and course fees, and UIC's base tuition plus engineering differential was $16,537 before fees. Compare the full I-20 estimate, not tuition alone.
