Pakistani students applying for a UK study visa can face two credibility interviews: the university's pre CAS interview, held before it issues your CAS, and a UKVI credibility interview, used to decide whether you are a genuine student. Both ask about your course, university, money, career plans, ties to Pakistan, accommodation and any study gap. Below are 36 realistic questions, what each one checks and how to answer, as of October 2026.
What are the two credibility interviews for a UK study visa?
The university's pre CAS interview
Many UK universities interview international applicants before they issue a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). Each university sets its own format. Two published examples, checked on 14 October 2026:
- The University of Lincoln holds a 30 to 40 minute interview on Zoom or a similar platform, and says you must pass it before it can issue your CAS.
- UWE Bristol uses a recorded interview on the CAS Shield platform for most applicants: questions appear on screen and you answer on camera. You must confirm you are not using AI, and it tells applicants not to read from scripts.
Home Office sponsor guidance says a university must do all it can to recruit genuine students, and every refusal counts against its refusal rate. Our guide to UK student visa refusal reasons explains this compliance check.
The UKVI credibility interview
After you apply, UKVI can interview you to test the genuine student requirement. The caseworker guidance says:
- For applications made outside the UK, an Entry Clearance Manager must authorise the interview, taking account of risk factors.
- It can be a telephone call, where the caseworker asks whether you can answer questions about your application now.
- It can also be arranged by email or phone for a set time and place.
- If you do not attend and give no reason, or an unacceptable one, the caseworker must refuse.
Lincoln describes its interview as preparation for a possible UKVI one, so passing it does not rule out the second.
What is the interviewer checking?
The caseworker guidance lists factors to weigh. In short, they are:
- your immigration history, including refusals for any country;
- your education history, including time since you last studied and whether the course is academic progression;
- your reasons for, knowledge of and research into the course, the university and your living arrangements;
- how the course fits your plans after study;
- whether your funds come from a credible source and how they were acquired;
- your expected monthly spending and how far your accommodation is from campus;
- your English, and any concerns about your agent or your university.
The guidance also protects you. A caseworker must not refuse you for not knowing bus routes or your city's geography, and must recognise the considerable investment a UK degree involves.
UK study visa interview questions, by theme
These are realistic questions, not an official list. The wording and order will change.
Your course
- Why did you choose this course?
- Which modules will you study in your first term, and which optional modules will you pick?
- How is the course assessed, and how long does it last?
- How does it build on your FSc, your bachelor's or your work?
- Is this a higher level than your last qualification?
- Could you study something similar in Pakistan? Why not do that?
Checking: that you researched the course and that it is a sensible next step. Answer well: name two or three real modules and say what each gives you. If the course is at the same level as your last degree, explain exactly what it adds. For the Pakistan question, describe what this course offers rather than criticising home.
Your university and the UK
- Why this university?
- Which other universities did you apply to, and did you get offers?
- Why the UK rather than Canada, Australia or the USA?
- Why does this city suit you?
- Did an agent help you? What research did you do yourself?
Checking: your own research, and what pulled you to the UK. Answer well: give concrete reasons such as course content, a placement year, fees or a scholarship. Lincoln asks applicants who used an agent to talk about the research they did themselves, so "my agent chose it" is a weak answer. The guidance lists ease of working as a pull factor caseworkers weigh when judging your motivation.
Money, bank statement and sponsor
- Who is paying for your studies?
- What does your sponsor do, and what do they earn?
- How was the money in the account built up?
- Your bank statement shows a large deposit. Where did it come from?
- What is your tuition fee, and how much have you paid?
- How much will you spend each month in the UK?
- Do you plan to work to pay your fees?
Checking: a credible source of funds and a realistic budget. Answer well: know the fee on your CAS and the deposit you paid. Know the official living cost figure: £1,529 a month in London or £1,171 elsewhere for applications made before 30 November 2026, rising to £1,570 and £1,203 from that date. Explain the source plainly, such as your father's salary, the family business or a plot sale, and keep the salary slips, FBR tax returns or sale deed that prove it. Do not suggest part time work will cover your fees.
Career plans
- What will you do after you finish?
- Which employers or roles in Pakistan are you aiming for?
- What salary could you expect with this degree?
- Do you plan to apply for the Graduate visa?
- Why do you need this degree for that career?
Checking: that the course fits a real plan. Answer well: name the kind of employer and role, and why the degree helps you get there. The guidance accepts that students may lawfully extend or switch to another route, so mentioning the Graduate route honestly is fine. The problem is an answer where UK work is the whole plan.
Ties to Pakistan and travel history
- Who do you live with in Pakistan, and what do they do?
- Do you have relatives in the UK?
- Have you ever been refused a visa for any country?
- Have you travelled abroad before?
Checking: your immigration history and whether you have followed visa rules before. Answer well: be truthful about relatives and every past refusal, including Canada, Australia or the USA, and explain what has changed since. Not disclosing a relevant fact can be treated as deception under SUI 9.1.
Accommodation
- Where will you live?
- How far is it from campus, and how will you get there?
- How much is the rent, and have you paid a deposit?
- Will you live alone or share?
Checking: that your living plan is researched and affordable. Answer well: name university halls or a real area, give the rent, and make sure it fits the budget you described.
Study gap, low CGPA and English
- What have you done since your last qualification?
- Why go back to study now?
- Why this subject, when your work has been in a different field?
- Your CGPA was low. Why will you succeed on this course?
- How did you prove your English for this course?
Checking: sound reasons for returning to study, commitment, and whether your spoken English matches your file. Answer well: account for every year with job letters, salary slips or course certificates. If your CGPA was low, own it and explain what changed. Our article on study gaps accepted by each country shows what evidence helps.
How should you answer in your own words?
- Never memorise a script. UWE Bristol tells applicants not to read prepared answers, and scripts fall apart at the first follow up question.
- Know your own numbers. Fee, deposit, monthly budget, sponsor's income.
- Stay consistent. Every answer must match your CAS, bank statement, sponsor letter and personal statement.
- Never misstate your funds. A fake bank letter, or borrowed money presented as family savings, is deception. Under SUI 10.1 an application can be refused even when a third party, such as an agent, provided the false document without your knowledge.
- Say when you do not know. A short honest answer beats an invented one.
- Use no notes or AI. UWE Bristol makes you confirm you are not using AI.
How do you practise for a UKVI interview from Pakistan?
Ask someone who does not know your file to question you in English and to interrupt. Do one round by phone, since UKVI may call. After you apply, keep your phone on and check your email, including spam.

Frequently asked questions
What questions are asked in a UK credibility interview?
Expect questions on why you chose your course and university, how it builds on your previous studies, who is paying and how the money was earned, your monthly budget, where you will live, your plans after graduating, your ties to Pakistan, past refusals and any study gap. Prepare to explain your own plan rather than memorising answers.
Does every Pakistani student get a UKVI credibility interview?
No. UKVI caseworker guidance says a caseworker must interview you before refusing on genuine student grounds, with two narrow exceptions, and an Entry Clearance Manager authorises interviews for applications from outside the UK based on risk factors. Separately, many universities interview applicants before issuing a CAS, so prepare as if both will happen.
Can I be refused after passing the university's pre CAS interview?
Yes. The pre CAS interview is the university's own check and only decides whether it issues your CAS. UKVI makes the visa decision separately and can still interview you and refuse your application if it is not satisfied you are a genuine student, or if your funds or documents fail the rules.
What happens if I miss the UKVI interview call?
Contact UKVI quickly with a reason. The caseworker guidance says an interview can only be rearranged if you give adequate reasons. If the interviewer confirms you did not attend and gave no reason, or an unacceptable one, the caseworker must refuse. Keep your phone on and check your email, including spam, after you apply.
Can I fail the interview for not knowing the city?
No. UKVI caseworker guidance (version 14.0, 3 August 2026) says caseworkers must not refuse you based on your knowledge of the place where you will study, such as bus routes or local geography. You should still know your campus, accommodation plan and monthly costs.
