A US visa photo must be in colour, taken within the last six months, against a plain white or off white background, with no glasses. A printed photo is 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm). The photo you upload to the DS-160 must be a square JPEG between 600 x 600 and 1200 x 1200 pixels, no larger than 240 kB. For an F1 study visa from Pakistan, also bring one printed photo to your interview.
What size is a US visa photo?
The State Department sets the same rules for every country, and the US Embassy and Consulate in Pakistan apply them. As of October 2026:
| Rule | Printed photo | Digital photo for the DS-160 |
|---|---|---|
| Size | 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm), which is 5.1 x 5.1 cm | Square, at least 600 x 600 pixels and at most 1200 x 1200 pixels |
| Head height, chin to top of hair | 1 inch to 1 3/8 inches (25 to 35 mm) | 50% to 69% of the image height |
| Eye height, from the bottom of the photo | 1 1/8 to 1 3/8 inches (28 to 35 mm) | 56% to 69% of the image height |
| Colour | Colour only. Black and white is refused | 24 bits per pixel, sRGB colour space |
| Paper or file | Photo quality paper, matte or glossy | JPEG, 240 kB or less |
The head must be centred, with the full head visible from the top of the hair to the bottom of the chin. Check the measurements yourself, because a print made for another document may be a different size.
What are the DS-160 photo upload rules for a study visa?
When you fill the DS-160 online, the form asks you to upload a digital image. These are the State Department's digital image requirements, checked on 14 October 2026:
- Shape: square, so the height equals the width.
- Dimensions: from 600 x 600 to 1200 x 1200 pixels.
- Format: JPEG only.
- File size: 240 kB or less. If your file is larger, compress it, keeping the compression ratio at 20:1 or less.
- Colour: 24 bit colour in sRGB, which most digital cameras produce.
If you are scanning a printed photo instead, the print must be 2 x 2 inches and scanned at 300 pixels per inch.
The State Department offers a free online photo tool that crops an image to exactly 600 x 600 pixels. It only crops. It does not check whether the photo meets the rules, and a State Department employee makes the final decision. Our step by step guide to the DS-160 form for an F1 visa shows where the upload sits in the form.
What are the rules on background, glasses, hijab and clothing?
The official rules, as of October 2026:
- Background: plain white or off white. No patterns, walls with texture, or shadows behind you.
- Pose: full face, looking straight at the camera, with both eyes open.
- Expression: neutral. The State Department says photos with unusual expressions or squinting are not accepted.
- Glasses: remove them. Since 1 November 2016 glasses are not allowed, except when they cannot be removed for medical reasons, such as recent eye surgery. You then need a statement signed by a medical professional, and the frames must not cover your eyes, with no glare or shadow. Sunglasses and tinted glasses are never allowed in a visa photo.
- Head covering: a hijab or other head covering is allowed only if you wear it daily for religious reasons. Your full face must be visible, and the covering must not cast shadows on your face. A cap or hat worn for style must come off.
- Clothing: wear what you normally wear day to day. Uniforms, clothing that looks like a uniform, and camouflage are not allowed, except religious clothing worn daily.
- Headphones and similar items: not allowed. A hearing aid you normally wear is fine.
- Editing: none. Photos must not be digitally enhanced or altered to change your appearance. Even removing red eye with editing software is not allowed, although a camera's red eye reduction setting is.
Why is a DS-160 photo rejected?
A photo can fail at two points: when you upload it to the DS-160, or later, when the Embassy reviews your case. USTravelDocs Pakistan is clear that a photo which does not meet the requirements must be replaced before your visa is processed, even if the online system accepted it.
The most common problems, based on the State Department's rules and photo examples:
- The photo is too old. It must be from the last six months. If you are applying for a new visa, it generally cannot be the photo from your old visa.
- Glasses. Any glasses, including clear ones, unless you have the medical exception.
- Shadows or glare. Shadows on the face or background, or flash glare on the skin.
- Wrong head size or position. Head too small, too large, tilted or off centre.
- Background is not plain white or off white. Grey, blue or patterned backgrounds fail.
- Low quality. Blurry, pixelated or dark images. The State Department says most webcams and mobile phones cannot produce images of sufficient quality.
- Copied photos. A photo copied or scanned from your CNIC, passport, driving licence or another document is not accepted.
- Filters or editing. Beauty filters, skin smoothing or background replacement count as digital alteration.
- Snapshots and full length photos. Snapshots, magazine photos and full length photos are not accepted.
What if the confirmation page shows an X instead of your photo?
An "X" in the photo box on your DS-160 confirmation page means the upload failed. The State Department says you should then submit one printed photo that meets the rules, along with the confirmation page, at your interview. If the confirmation page shows your photo, the upload worked.
What photo should you bring to your study visa interview in Pakistan?
USTravelDocs Pakistan lists, for F and M applicants, one 2 x 2 inch (51 x 51 mm) photograph taken within the last six months. Bring it even if your DS-160 upload succeeded. Practical points:
- Use the same photo you uploaded, or one from the same session, so the print and the upload match.
- Keep it flat and clean inside your document folder.
- Carry papers in a plastic bag. At the Embassy in Islamabad and the Consulate in Karachi you can only carry plastic bags containing application papers, and phones are not allowed.
The photo is one item on a longer list. Our checklist of USA student visa requirements for Pakistan covers the rest, from your I-20 to bank statements.
How do you get a correct US visa photo in Pakistan?
The State Department recommends a professional visa photo service. If you use a photo studio, a few requests avoid a retake:
- Ask for "US visa, 2 x 2 inches, white background".
- Ask for the digital file too, as a JPEG of 240 kB or less, square, at least 600 x 600 pixels.
- Take off your glasses before the photo, and remove any cap.
- Ask for no beauty editing. Many studios smooth skin by default. Say no.
- Wear your normal clothes, not a school, college or work uniform.
- Check the result against the table above before you leave the shop.
Do you need a new photo after a change in appearance? Growing a beard or colouring your hair is not usually a significant change. Significant facial surgery or injury, adding or removing many or large piercings or tattoos, or a large weight change can mean a new photo. In every case, acceptance is at the discretion of the Embassy or Consulate where you apply.
If a child is applying as an F2 dependant, no other person can appear in the photo, and the child's eyes must be open and looking at the camera.

Frequently asked questions
Can I wear glasses in a US visa photo?
No. Since 1 November 2016, glasses are not allowed in new US visa photos. The only exception is when glasses cannot be removed for medical reasons, such as recent eye surgery, and you must provide a statement signed by a medical professional. Even then, the frames cannot cover your eyes and there must be no glare. Sunglasses and tinted glasses are never allowed.
What is the US visa photo size in cm and pixels?
A printed US visa photo is 2 x 2 inches, which is 51 x 51 mm or 5.1 x 5.1 cm. The digital photo for the DS-160 must be square, between 600 x 600 and 1200 x 1200 pixels, in JPEG format and no larger than 240 kB. Your head should take up 50% to 69% of the image height.
Can I wear a hijab in my US visa photo?
Yes, if you wear it daily for religious reasons. The State Department requires your full face to be visible, and the hijab must not cast shadows on your face. Hats or head coverings worn for other reasons must be removed. Religious clothing you wear daily is also allowed, while uniforms are not.
Can I use my CNIC or passport photo for a US visa?
No. The State Department does not accept photos copied or scanned from official documents such as a CNIC, passport or driving licence. You need a new photo taken within the last six months that meets the US visa rules, including the 2 x 2 inch size, white or off white background and no glasses.
Do I need to bring a printed photo if my DS-160 photo uploaded?
For an F1 study visa in Pakistan, yes. USTravelDocs Pakistan lists one 2 x 2 inch photo taken within the last six months among the items F and M applicants submit. If your DS-160 confirmation page shows an "X" instead of your photo, the upload failed and a printed photo is essential.
