Pakistani students no longer book a Germany student visa appointment in the old way. You register on the Federal Foreign Office's Consular Services Portal, upload your documents, and the German Embassy in Islamabad or the Consulate General in Karachi screens your file. Only then do you receive an appointment, or a request for missing documents. Here is how it works as of October 2026, and what causes delays.
How do you get a Germany student visa appointment from Pakistan?
Germany's Consular Services Portal went live worldwide on 1 January 2025 for national visas, including study. The German Missions in Pakistan now direct all student visa applicants to it. The process is:
- Register on the portal at digital.diplo.de/studium.
- Complete the questionnaire. It builds the list of documents for your case.
- Scan and upload every document, including the mandatory ones listed below.
- Wait for the first screening. A visa officer checks your file.
- Receive one of two replies: an appointment notification, or a request for further or corrected documents.
- Attend your appointment in person at the mission, with readable A4 copies sorted in the right order, and pay the €75 fee in rupees in cash.
Which mission handles your application?
| Mission | Applicants from |
|---|---|
| German Embassy Islamabad | Islamabad Capital Territory, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir |
| Consulate General Karachi | Sindh and Balochistan |
So a student from Lahore or Multan applies to Islamabad, and a student from Hyderabad or Quetta applies to Karachi. Both use the same portal link.
Which documents must you upload from the start?
The Missions single out three documents. The portal wrongly marks some of them as optional because of technical problems, yet they must be submitted from the outset:
- previous degree certificates (school, bachelor's or earlier master's);
- transcripts for those degrees;
- proof of tuition fee payment, if your course charges fees.
If any of these is missing, your registration stays on hold and you receive a reminder email. For a Pakistani applicant that usually means your Matric and Intermediate (FSc, ICS, A levels) certificates, plus your bachelor's degree and transcript if you are applying for a master's.
The Embassy's student checklist (dated October 2023) lists the full set:
| Document | Notes |
|---|---|
| National visa application form | Completed, signed, with a recent biometric photo glued on |
| Passport copies | First two pages. Passport valid for at least one year plus three months |
| ID card copy | Your CNIC |
| Application declarations | The Embassy's declaration form |
| Appointment confirmation | Printout of your email |
| Explanation of past visa refusals | If you have any |
| Curriculum vitae | Your CV |
| Letter of admission | From your German university |
| Enrolment certificate | Mandatory if the semester has started, with a university letter confirming you can join late |
| Language proof | In the language of instruction |
| Proof of funds | Blocked account, a formal obligation letter, or a scholarship |
| Tuition fee proof | For the first year, if applicable |
| Academic and work documents | Degrees, school certificates and any employment certificates |
| Travel health insurance | Valid from your intended date of travel |
That checklist still shows a blocked amount of €11,208. It is out of date. Use the current figure below.
How much is the blocked account for 2026?
The German Missions in Pakistan ask for €992 a month, or €11,904 for one year, for all visa applications since 1 January 2025. DAAD's Study in Germany site gives the same yearly figure, and neither source shows a different amount for 2026. In particular cases, the Embassy and Consulate General can ask for a blocked amount covering up to two years.
Points that trip students up:
- Signature attestation. Your signature on the account opening documents must be attested by the Embassy in Islamabad, the Consulate General in Karachi or the Honorary Consul in Lahore. Bring your passport and a black and white copy of the page showing your signature. The fee is €25 (about PKR 5,400), in exact cash, and this appointment is booked separately from the visa.
- Provider. You can choose any provider, but it must give the visa section a login code so the account can be verified.
- Alternatives. A formal obligation letter (Verpflichtungserklärung) signed by a sponsor living in Germany before a migration office can replace the blocked account. For scholarships from Pakistan, the Missions accept only one awarded by HEC; a scholarship from a Pakistani university is not sufficient.

What health insurance do you need?
For the visa, the Embassy asks for travel health insurance valid from your intended date of travel. After you arrive and enrol, health insurance is compulsory for every student in Germany. DAAD says statutory insurers charge students under 30 about €120 to €130 a month, while from age 30 you pay the standard contribution, which is often much higher. Private plans exist but usually require payment in advance.
Do Pakistani students need an APS certificate?
As of 14 October 2026, the student visa page, the financing page and the student checklist of the German Missions in Pakistan do not list an APS certificate. The APS (Akademische Prüfstelle) is a document check that German missions require in certain countries. For example, it has been mandatory for Indian student visa applicants since 1 November 2022, which is why it appears in so much online advice. If a German university asks you for APS, ask its admissions office to confirm in writing.
How long does the German student visa take from Pakistan?
There is no published processing time. The Missions say demand still exceeds their capacity, that they work on applications in the order received, and ask applicants not to send further inquiries, because answering them reduces the capacity left for processing.
What you can control:
- Apply for admission early, so the letter arrives months before the semester.
- Open and fund your blocked account, and book the signature attestation, as soon as you accept the offer.
- Register on the portal the day your admission letter arrives, with all three mandatory documents uploaded.
- Answer any request for corrected documents quickly.
- If the semester start is close, ask your university for written acceptance of late arrival, or an enrolment letter for the next semester. The Missions say submitting either helps the process.
What happens after you submit?
After screening, you get an appointment or a request for more documents. At the appointment you hand in your documents and pay the fee, and the mission then decides. If your visa is issued, you travel, register your address with the local residents' office (usually within a week, according to DAAD's Study in Germany site), and apply for your residence permit at the local foreigners' authority.
If you are refused, note that the remonstration procedure ended on 1 July 2025. You can submit a new application at any time, or file a complaint with the Administrative Court in Berlin, which must be done in German and involves court costs.
Common reasons for delays
| Cause | How to avoid it |
|---|---|
| Degree certificates, transcripts or tuition proof not uploaded at first | Upload all three at registration, even if the portal says optional |
| Old blocked account figure | Block €11,904, not the €11,208 on the 2023 checklist |
| Blocked account signature not attested, or provider cannot be verified | Book attestation early and choose a provider with an authority login |
| Passport expiring too soon | Renew it so it is valid for one year plus three months |
| Unreadable scans or documents out of order | Clear A4 copies in the checklist order |
| Semester already started | Get a late arrival letter or enrolment certificate from your university |
| Booking through an agent | Apply only through the official portal |
| Past refusals not explained | Add a short written explanation |

Frequently asked questions
How do I book a German student visa appointment in Pakistan?
You do not book it directly. Register on the Consular Services Portal at digital.diplo.de/studium, complete the questionnaire and upload your documents, including degree certificates, transcripts and any tuition proof. After a visa officer screens your file, you receive an appointment notification or a request for more documents. Islamabad handles Punjab, ICT, KP, GB and AJK; Karachi handles Sindh and Balochistan.
How long does a German student visa take from Pakistan?
The German Missions in Pakistan do not publish a fixed processing time. They say demand exceeds capacity and files are handled in the order received. Complete uploads, a correctly funded blocked account and quick replies to document requests keep your file moving. If your semester has started, a late arrival or enrolment letter from your university helps.
How much is the blocked account for Germany in 2026?
€992 a month, or €11,904 for one year. The German Missions in Pakistan have applied this figure to all applications since 1 January 2025, and it is still current in October 2026. In particular cases they can ask for up to two years. Your signature on the account documents must be attested, for a €25 fee.
Is APS required for Pakistani students going to Germany?
The German Missions in Pakistan do not list an APS certificate on their student visa page, financing page or checklist (checked 14 October 2026). APS is required for student visas in some other countries, such as India. If a university asks you for one, get the requirement confirmed in writing by its admissions office.
Can an agent get me an earlier German visa appointment?
No. The German Missions in Pakistan state that agencies or consultants can never provide visa appointments or earlier appointments, and they call any such claim fraudulent. Appointments booked through agents may be cancelled. The only route is the official Consular Services Portal, and the speed of your file depends on how complete it is.
