To get an I-20 from a US university, you first accept your admission offer. Then you send the university's financial form with bank letters or statements showing you can pay the first year, a copy of your passport, and any sponsor or scholarship letters. A designated school official checks them and issues the I-20, usually as a PDF by email. You need it for your F1 study visa.
What is an I-20, and how is it different from an admission letter?
The Form I-20 is the Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status. It is a US government form, created in SEVIS, the database that tracks F1 students. Your admission letter is the university's academic decision. The I-20 is the document the visa process runs on.
| Admission letter | Form I-20 | |
|---|---|---|
| Who issues it | The admissions office | A designated school official (DSO) in the international office |
| When | When you are admitted | After admission and a check of your funds |
| What it proves | You have a place on a programme | You are eligible for F1 status at an SEVP certified school |
| Used for | Accepting the offer | SEVIS fee, DS-160, visa interview and entry to the US |
Study in the States lists what the I-20 contains: your personal and academic details, your SEVIS ID, the school's SEVIS code, your programme start and end dates, tuition and living costs with your financial resources, and the DSO's and your signatures. You must have it before you pay the SEVIS fee. If you are under 18, a parent signs it for you. A spouse or child coming with you on an F2 visa needs a separate I-20.
How do universities issue the I-20 after admission?
Under 8 CFR 214.3(k), a DSO can only issue your I-20 once the school has received and reviewed your application, transcripts and proof of financial responsibility, and the admissions office has accepted you for a full course of study. In practice the steps look like this:
- Accept your offer in the applicant portal.
- Complete the school's financial form. Names differ: Arizona State uses a Financial Guarantee Form, the University of Houston a Letter of Financial Backing Form, and Stevens a Financial Verification Form.
- Upload your financial evidence, such as bank statements, bank letters and scholarship letters.
- Upload your passport biographic page, and your dependants' passports if they will come with you.
- The DSO reviews everything and creates your record in SEVIS.
- You receive the I-20, usually by email or through the portal. Arizona State, for example, says it does not mail a physical I-20; you download it, print it and sign it.
Study in the States says students must present a printed, signed copy at the visa interview and at the port of entry.
Which documents from Pakistan do you need for an I-20 and study visa?
Each university writes its own rules, so read the international office page of your school carefully. Examples checked on 14 October 2026:
- Arizona State: funds covering one academic year (nine months) of tuition, fees and living costs; financial documents dated within 12 months of the first day of your semester; only the bank summary, with no transaction history and no screenshots.
- University of Houston Graduate School: the financial backing form, a bank statement and passport pages; documents under six months old are processed faster.
- Stevens: proof of funds meeting its published requirements, the financial verification form for 2026 to 2027, and a passport copy.
For a typical Pakistani family file, that means:
- A bank statement or bank letter in English from your own or your sponsor's bank, on letterhead, showing the available balance. Know its value in dollars, because the school compares it with its cost figure.
- The school's sponsor or financial form, signed by the parent or relative paying.
- A scholarship or assistantship letter, if you have one. Arizona State, for example, wants the student's full name, the amount and the duration of the award.
- Your passport copy. Make sure your name on the application matches your passport.
The I-20 is not your visa file. At the interview you show original bank statements or bank books, your sponsor's latest original tax forms, and proof of relationship such as your birth certificate. Our guide to the bank statement for a US student visa from Pakistan explains what the visa officer checks.
How long does it take to get an I-20 for a study visa?
The school decides. Three published examples, checked on 14 October 2026:
| University | Published I-20 processing time | When the clock starts |
|---|---|---|
| Arizona State University | Aims to review documents within 7 to 10 business days | After all documents arrive and you are fully admitted |
| University of Houston Graduate School | 5 to 7 business days | From submission of the I-20 request to completion in SEVIS |
| Stevens Institute of Technology | At least 10 business days, longer in busy periods | From a complete application. Fall I-20s are processed from mid February |
The biggest delay is usually missing or unclear paperwork. The University of Houston says an incomplete request goes back into the queue once you resubmit. Send clear, complete documents the week you accept your offer.
What should you check on your I-20 before the SEVIS fee and DS-160?
Check your I-20 the day it arrives, before you pay the $350 SEVIS fee or fill the DS-160:
- Name exactly as in your passport, with surname and given names in the right fields. Pakistani names without a family name are often split wrongly, so compare letter by letter.
- Date of birth, country of birth and country of citizenship.
- SEVIS ID, which starts with N, and the school code. You need both for the SEVIS fee and the DS-160.
- Programme details: level, major, start date and end date. Your visa timing and arrival date depend on the start date.
- English proficiency field, stating whether the school requires it and whether you have met it.
- Financial section: the estimated costs for the period shown, usually one academic year, and the funding listed against them, including any scholarship.
- Signatures: the DSO's signature, and then yours. Sign before your interview.
Then pay the SEVIS fee using the SEVIS ID and school code, which our guide to SEVIS fee payment from Pakistan walks through, and copy the same details into your DS-160.
What if the details on your I-20 are wrong?
Email the international office straight away, explain the error, and attach a scan of your passport biographic page. Study in the States says DSOs issue updated I-20s when personal information or programme details change. Wait for the corrected I-20 before you pay the SEVIS fee or submit your DS-160.
If you already paid the SEVIS fee, compare the SEVIS ID on the corrected I-20 with your fee receipt. If it is different, you can ask for the payment to be transferred to the new record. If you already submitted a DS-160 with the wrong details, our guide to the DS-160 for an F1 visa explains how to correct it before your interview.
Holding I-20s from two universities is allowed. The State Department's visa manual says the visa application is considered only on the I-20 of the school you will actually attend, and that school's name is printed on your visa.

Frequently asked questions
Is the I-20 the same as an admission letter?
No. The admission letter is the university's academic offer. The I-20 is the Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status, issued by a designated school official in the US government's SEVIS system after admission and a review of your funds. You need the I-20, not the admission letter, to pay the SEVIS fee, complete the DS-160 and attend your F1 interview.
How long does it take to get an I-20 after admission?
It depends on the university. As of October 2026, Arizona State aims to review documents within 7 to 10 business days, the University of Houston Graduate School allows 5 to 7 business days, and Stevens says at least 10 business days. The clock usually starts only when all documents are in, so submit complete financial documents quickly.
How much bank balance is needed for an I-20?
Enough for the first year of tuition, fees and living costs as estimated by your university, minus any scholarship. Arizona State, for example, asks for funds covering one academic year of nine months. The exact figure is on each university's cost or financial form page, and it later appears on your I-20.
Can I get an I-20 without IELTS?
Only if the university admits you without IELTS. SEVP rules do not allow an I-20 on conditional admission, so you must meet the school's English requirement, through another accepted test, an English medium waiver or the school's own route, before the I-20 is issued. The I-20 states whether English proficiency is required and met.
Do I need the original I-20 for the visa interview?
You need a printed copy signed by you. Many schools now send the I-20 electronically, and Study in the States says students must present a printed, signed I-20 at the visa interview and at the port of entry. Carry it in your hand luggage, not your suitcase, when you travel.
