After a US study visa is approved in Pakistan, USTravelDocs says visa processing typically takes five working days, though some cases take longer. Your passport then goes to the pickup location you chose when you booked your interview, or to your home if you chose premium delivery. You receive an email and SMS when it is "Ready for Pick Up". A 221(g) case takes longer and has no fixed timeline.
How long does it take to get your passport back after study visa approval?
If the officer approves your F1 visa at the interview, the Embassy keeps your passport to print the visa. As of October 2026, the official guidance for Pakistan says:
- USTravelDocs Pakistan: "visa processing time is typically five working days", though processing for specific cases may vary.
- USTravelDocs FAQ: the majority of applications are processed and ready to pick up within a few business days, but some need administrative processing.
- Delivery time is extra. USTravelDocs notes that published processing times do not include the time needed to return passports by courier.
So plan on about a week from interview to pickup in a straightforward case, and allow extra days if you chose home delivery. No official source promises a fixed date. USTravelDocs strongly advises applicants not to book travel until they have their passport and visa in hand.
Timing still matters for your I-20. A new student's F1 visa can be issued up to 365 days before the start date on the I-20, but you cannot enter the US more than 30 days before that date. Our guide to US visa appointment wait times in Pakistan helps you work backwards from your start date.
Where do you collect your passport in Pakistan?
You choose a pickup location when you schedule your interview. USTravelDocs lists these AEG locations, checked 14 October 2026:
| Location | Type | Hours | Extra fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Islamabad: AEG, ISE Tower, Jinnah Avenue | Standard | Monday to Friday, 9 am to 1 pm | None |
| Karachi: AEG, Emerald Tower, Block 5, Clifton | Standard | Monday to Friday, 9 am to 1 pm | None |
| Lahore: AEG, Al Hafeez Business Avenue, Gulberg III | Premium | Monday to Saturday, with lunch and prayer breaks | PKR 1,900 per passport |
| Sialkot: AEG, Sialkot Business and Commerce Center, Paris Road | Premium | Monday to Saturday, with lunch and prayer breaks | PKR 1,900 per passport |
| Multan: AEG, Business City Plaza, Bosan Road | Premium | Monday to Saturday, with lunch and prayer breaks | PKR 1,900 per passport |
You can also choose premium home delivery. A courier brings the passport to your door, and you pay PKR 1,900 per applicant in cash on delivery. The receipt is emailed to you after delivery. Premium services are optional and are not part of the visa application fee.
If you live in Punjab and interview in Islamabad or Karachi, you do not have to travel back for your passport: a premium centre or home delivery saves the second trip.
Can you change the pickup location?
Yes, until 11:59 pm on the day of your interview. Log in to your profile on the official scheduling website and use the change address option. After that deadline, the passport goes where you chose.
How do you track your passport after the visa interview?
There are three official ways, all listed by USTravelDocs Pakistan:
- CEAC status check. On the State Department's CEAC website, choose a nonimmigrant visa, select Islamabad or Karachi as your interview location, and enter your DS-160 barcode number (it starts with AA). "Issued" means the visa has been approved.
- Email and SMS. When your passport reaches your pickup location, you get a message that it is "Ready for Pick Up". Check your spam and junk folders regularly.
- Phone (IVR). A 24 hour automated line in English and Urdu on +92 21 111 234 111, or +1 703 988 3426 from the United States.
The Embassy says the call centre cannot give status information on a pending application, so use CEAC for that.
What documents do you need to collect your passport?
You must show a government issued photo ID, because the centre will not hand a passport to an unauthorized person. Accepted IDs are a passport biographic page, a CNIC or a driving licence. Since your passport is with the Embassy, most students use their CNIC. Requirements as of 14 October 2026:
| Who is collecting | Bring |
|---|---|
| You, for your own passport | Your original photo ID with a photocopy, plus your DS-160 confirmation page or appointment letter (preferred) |
| Someone else, including a family member | A photocopy of your ID, their original photo ID, an original letter of authority signed by you, and your DS-160 confirmation or appointment letter |
| A representative, for an applicant under 18 | A photocopy of the child's ID, the representative's original ID, a letter of authority signed by one parent, and a clear copy of that parent's ID |
| One person, for a group or family | A photocopy of each applicant's ID, their own original ID, one letter of authority covering every applicant, and the DS-160 confirmations or appointment letters |
The original letter of authority must give the representative's full name as on their ID, and each applicant's name and passport number. Applicants under 18 cannot collect any passport themselves; a parent can collect it in person.
Collect it promptly. Passports left at a collection centre for more than 14 calendar days are returned to the US Embassy, and you then have to collect them from the Embassy or Consulate.
What should you check on your F1 study visa?
USTravelDocs tells applicants to check the visa as soon as they receive it. Check it at the counter, before you leave:
- Personal details, such as your name, date of birth and passport number, match your passport exactly.
- Visa type shows F1 (printed as F-1).
- Annotation shows your SEVIS ID and your school's name, matching your I-20. The State Department's visa manual requires this on every initial F1 visa.
- Entries and expiration date. The State Department's reciprocity table for Pakistan lists F1 visas as multiple entry, valid for 60 months, with no issuance fee. Officers can issue a shorter visa in an individual case, so read your own dates.
The expiration date is the last day you can use the visa to enter the US. It does not decide how long you can stay; that is set at the airport when you are admitted.
What if something is wrong?
If you think your visa was printed incorrectly, USTravelDocs asks you to email support-pakistan@usvisascheduling.com and explain the error. They will tell you how to resubmit your passport if needed. Do not travel on a visa with a wrong name or SEVIS ID.
If you change universities after your visa is issued, speak to the new school and the Embassy before you fly. Your first entry must be to the school named on the visa, and the officer at the port of entry can refuse a student who arrives with an I-20 from a different school.
What if your study visa goes into 221(g) administrative processing?
A 221(g) refusal means your case needs more documents or administrative processing before a decision. USTravelDocs says most administrative processing is resolved within 180 days of the interview, while the Embassy's own page says within 60 days. Both say timing varies case by case.
If the Embassy is holding your passport and you need it, USTravelDocs says you can email support-pakistan@usvisascheduling.com with your details to ask for it back. It is returned to your chosen pickup location, and you should allow at least one week. When processing ends, the Embassy contacts you and tells you what to submit. Our full guide to 221(g) administrative processing for F1 students explains document drop off, CEAC statuses and waiting periods.
Not sure where you stand?
Waiting for a passport is stressful when a semester start date is close. If you have a study visa interview coming up, or a 221(g) letter in hand, send your I-20 start date, interview date and the details on your letter to a Via Nova counsellor on WhatsApp at +92 316 4448062. You will get an honest view of your timeline and what to tell your university. See our USA study visa service for how we support F1 applicants. Only the Embassy decides visas and timings.
Frequently asked questions
How many days to get passport back after US visa approval in Pakistan?
USTravelDocs Pakistan says visa processing typically takes five working days, and that some cases take longer. Courier delivery adds time on top. You get an email and SMS when the passport is ready at your pickup location. A case refused under 221(g) for administrative processing has no fixed timeline, so plan carefully around your I-20 start date.
How do I track my passport on USTravelDocs Pakistan?
Use the CEAC status check on the State Department website with your interview location and DS-160 barcode number. You will also get an email and SMS when your passport is "Ready for Pick Up". USTravelDocs also runs a 24 hour IVR line on +92 21 111 234 111 in English and Urdu.
Can someone else collect my passport from AEG?
Yes. A representative, including a family member, needs their own original photo ID, a photocopy of your ID, an original letter of authority signed by you, and preferably your DS-160 confirmation page or appointment letter. For an applicant under 18, the letter must be signed by one parent, with a copy of that parent's ID.
Can I change my passport pickup location after the interview?
Yes, but only until 11:59 pm on the day of your interview. Change it in your profile on the official scheduling website. You can switch between the standard AEG centres in Islamabad and Karachi, the three premium centres in Punjab, or premium home delivery for PKR 1,900.
What happens if I do not collect my passport within 14 days?
USTravelDocs says passports not collected within 14 calendar days are returned to the US Embassy. You then have to collect your passport directly from the Embassy in Islamabad or the Consulate in Karachi. Check the Embassy's schedule before you go, and collect from the centre on time to avoid the extra trip.
