Yes, Pakistanis can apply for Spain's digital nomad visa, officially the international telework visa, at the Embassy of Spain in Islamabad. As of October 2026 you need at least EUR 2,442 a month gross from employers or clients outside Spain, at least 3 months of work with them, a degree or 3 years of experience, and Spanish Social Security registration. Appointments are requested by email.

How much income do you need, and why do some sites say EUR 2,849?

Spain sets the threshold at 200% of its minimum wage, the SMI (salario mínimo interprofesional). Royal Decree 126/2026 fixes the 2026 SMI at EUR 1,221 a month, and uses EUR 17,094 as the yearly figure. That yearly figure is 14 payments of EUR 1,221, because Spanish salaries include two extra payments a year.

This is where the confusion comes from:

  • The official reading: 200% of the monthly SMI, so 2 x EUR 1,221 = EUR 2,442 a month gross. The Spanish Consulate General in Washington publishes exactly this figure for 2026, along with the family amounts below.
  • The blog reading: 200% of the yearly SMI spread over 12 months, so EUR 34,188 divided by 12, about EUR 2,849. You will see this figure on many sites. It is not the published consular figure.
HouseholdMonthly gross income needed (2026)
You aloneEUR 2,442
You and a spouseEUR 3,358
You, a spouse and one childEUR 3,664
You, a spouse and two childrenEUR 3,970

The Islamabad page accepts any evidence, such as an employment or commercial contract, but the money must be your own, lawful and available. Aim to sit clearly above the line.

Who qualifies: employees and freelancers

The visa is for remote work done with computers and telecoms for companies located outside Spain.

  • Employees may work only for companies outside Spain. You need at least 3 months of service and the company's written permission to work remotely.
  • Self employed people may also work for Spanish companies, as long as that is no more than 20% of their total work. At least 80% must come from clients outside Spain, with at least 3 months of relationship with them.
  • The company you work for must have had real, continuous activity for at least one year, shown by a commercial registry certificate.
  • Qualification: a degree from a reputable university, vocational training centre or business school, or at least 3 years of professional experience. Regulated professions need a recognised degree.

This is not a job search visa, and Via Nova does not arrange jobs or job offers.

The Social Security requirement: the biggest hurdle for Pakistanis

This is the part most guides skip. The Islamabad checklist asks for:

  • Employees: proof that your company has applied to register with Spanish Social Security, and proof of your own affiliation.
  • Self employed: proof of affiliation to RETA, Spain's scheme for self employed workers.
  • Both: a sworn statement committing to meet Spanish Social Security obligations before you start work.

The only alternative is a certificate from your home country's social security system under a bilateral agreement with Spain, and the embassy notes that only some countries issue one. We could not confirm any such agreement with Pakistan, so plan on Spanish registration and ask the embassy when you book.

For many Pakistani employers, registering in Spain is a big ask. Spanish law lets you register with Social Security using only your passport during your first six months, before you have a foreigner number (NIE). Expect to need help from a professional in Spain for this step, and budget for monthly Spanish contributions.

Two routes: the Islamabad visa or residence from inside Spain

  1. Visa from Pakistan. You apply at the embassy for a telework visa valid for up to one year. Within the 60 days before it expires, you can apply online to the UGE for a residence authorisation of up to 3 years.
  2. Residence from inside Spain. Spanish law lets people who are already in Spain lawfully apply straight to the UGE. The UGE must decide within 20 days, and if it does not, the application counts as approved. Renewals are for 2 years at a time.

Pakistanis need a Schengen visa just to enter Spain, so for most applicants the Islamabad route is the practical one. Once an authorisation over six months is granted, you apply for a foreigner identity card (TIE).

Applying from Pakistan

  • Where: the Embassy of Spain in Islamabad. You must show that you live legally in its consular district.
  • How to book: email emb.islamabad.vis@maec.es with the subject "solicitud de cita visado nómada digital". The visa page is in Spanish only; the English menu does not list it.
  • Submission: in person, or through a representative with a notarised power of attorney. You also apply for your NIE at the same time.
  • Fee: the telework page does not state an amount. The embassy's page for another national visa lists a fee equivalent to EUR 80. No rupee figure is published, so confirm when you book.
  • Decision: within 10 days from the day after submission, longer if the embassy asks for documents or an interview. Your receipt code lets you track the case online.
  • Collection: within one month of a favourable decision. A refusal must be in writing, and you can appeal to the embassy within one month or to the High Court of Justice of Madrid within two months.

Translations, apostille and attestation for Pakistani documents

The telework page does not spell out translation rules. The Islamabad embassy's pages for other national visas say foreign documents must be legalised or apostilled and come with an official Spanish translation, so prepare for the same and use a sworn translator (traductor jurado).

Pakistan joined the Apostille Convention with effect from 9 March 2023, and Spain is not among the eight states that objected. So a MOFA apostille works for Spain. Since 27 July 2026, MOFA accepts apostille requests only after online registration at apostille.mofa.gov.pk. Fees since 8 July 2024 are Rs 3,000 per personal or educational document, Rs 4,500 per legal document and Rs 12,000 per commercial document.

Before MOFA, your degree needs HEC attestation, and MOFA wants the police character certificate issued by your District Police Officer. In Punjab you can apply at any Police Khidmat Markaz for Rs 500, with a 3 working day turnaround.

Traps for Pakistani freelancers and remote employees

  • PKR statements vs euros. The threshold is in euros. Under State Bank of Pakistan rules from October 2023, freelancers can keep 50% of export earnings or USD 5,000 a month, whichever is higher, in a foreign currency account. Dollar statements show your income without rupee conversion.
  • Upwork and Fiverr clients. Spain looks at the companies you work for, not the platform. Each client relationship needs at least 3 months behind it, and the checklist asks for a registry certificate showing the company has existed for a year. Many small clients make that hard to prove.
  • Payoneer. Show Payoneer statements together with withdrawals into a Pakistani bank account in your name, so the money trail is complete. Our guide to proving freelance income for a digital nomad visa covers this.
  • FBR tax returns. They are not on the checklist, but a return that matches the income you claim supports your file.
  • Pakistani health insurance. It does not count unless the insurer is authorised in Spain.
  • The 20% cap. Count your Spanish clients before you apply if you are self employed.

Is Spain the right choice for you?

Spain's income line is lower than Portugal's, but the Social Security step makes it heavier than it looks. Frequently asked questions

What is the income requirement for the Spain digital nomad visa in 2026?

At least EUR 2,442 a month gross, which is 200% of Spain's 2026 minimum wage of EUR 1,221 a month. Add EUR 916 for the first family member and EUR 306 for each additional one. Some sites quote about EUR 2,849 because they spread the yearly minimum wage over 12 months, but the published consular figure is EUR 2,442.

How do I book a Spain digital nomad visa appointment in Islamabad?

Email emb.islamabad.vis@maec.es with the subject "solicitud de cita visado nómada digital". You submit in person at the Embassy of Spain in Islamabad, or through a representative with a notarised power of attorney. The embassy decides within 10 days of a complete application, longer if it asks for more documents or an interview.

Can Pakistani freelancers on Upwork apply for the Spain digital nomad visa?

Yes, as self employed applicants. Up to 20% of your work may be for Spanish companies. You must show at least 3 months of work with clients outside Spain, a registry certificate showing the client company has existed for a year, RETA registration, and income of at least EUR 2,442 a month. Many small clients make this harder to document.

Do I need Spanish Social Security for the Spain digital nomad visa?

Yes, in most cases. Employees need proof that their company has applied to register with Spanish Social Security and that they are affiliated. Self employed applicants need RETA affiliation. A home country certificate under a bilateral agreement can replace this, but we could not confirm one for Pakistan, so ask the embassy.

Can my family come with me on Spain's digital nomad visa?

Yes. Your spouse or partner, minor children, dependent adult children and dependent parents can apply with you or later. Your income must rise by EUR 916 for the first family member and EUR 306 for each additional one. Bring marriage and birth certificates, apostilled and translated into Spanish.
