It depends on course length and whether you hope to settle. Choose the UK if you want a one year master's, a 3 week study visa decision and a fixed funds rule. Choose Canada if you want up to 3 years of post graduation work, a spouse work permit on a longer master's and a defined route from Canadian work to permanent residence. Neither guarantees a visa.

How do the UK and Canada study visas compare in 2026?
Figures come from GOV.UK, IRCC, Statistics Canada and university pages listed under Sources, checked in October 2026. Each university sets its own fees in both countries, so tuition is shown through named examples.
| Factor | UK (Student visa) | Canada (study permit) |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition | One year master's in data science or computing £18,600 (Sheffield Hallam) to £41,400 (Manchester). BSc Computer Science £17,975 (Greenwich) to £39,700 (Manchester) a year | One year college graduate certificates CAD 17,126 (Seneca, tuition) to CAD 20,694.50 (Conestoga, with fees). Averages for 2026/27: CAD 24,693 for graduate and CAD 42,062 for undergraduate degrees (Statistics Canada) |
| Funds the visa needs | Unpaid first year fees plus £1,171 a month outside London or £1,529 in London, for up to 9 months, held 28 days in a row. From 30 November 2026: £1,203 and £1,570 | First year tuition plus CAD 23,448 for living costs and travel money. The Islamabad visa office asks for 12 months of bank statements |
| English test | CEFR B2 for degree level: an approved SELT such as IELTS for UKVI, or an assessment by your university | IRCC sets no test for the study permit. Your institution decides. A post graduation work permit later needs CLB 7 (university) or CLB 5 (college) |
| Work while studying | Up to 20 hours a week in term and full time in vacations, for degree level students | Up to 24 hours a week off campus in term and unlimited hours in scheduled breaks, if eligible |
| Post study work | Graduate visa: 2 years if you apply by 31 December 2026, 18 months from 1 January 2027, 3 years after a PhD | Post graduation work permit up to 3 years. Master's programmes of at least 8 months can qualify for 3 years. College programmes need an eligible field of study |
| Dependants | Only PhD or research degree students, or government sponsored students | Spouse open work permit only for master's of 16 months or longer, doctoral and some professional programmes |
| Visa processing time | Usually 3 weeks from your biometrics appointment. Priority (usually 5 working days) costs £500 extra where offered | IRCC estimate of 7 weeks from Pakistan, after a complete application. Most students need a PAL before applying |
| Route to permanent residence | Graduate visa, then a sponsored Skilled Worker job. GOV.UK still shows settlement after 5 years, but a 10 year standard has been proposed | Express Entry. The Canadian Experience Class needs 1 year of skilled work in Canada in the last 3 years, and work done as a full time student does not count. An invitation is not guaranteed |
| Typical intake | September. Some master's courses start in January | September. Many colleges also start in January, and some in May |
What the table does not show is the cap. IRCC planned up to 408,000 study permits for 2026, including 155,000 for new arrivals, and provinces share out PALs among their institutions. Bachelor's degrees, college programmes and master's at private institutions still need a PAL, so ask your institution early when it will issue one. On the UK side, Pakistan is not covered by the visa brake that has stopped Student visas for four other nationalities since March 2026.
Choose the UK if
- You want a one year master's. You pay one year of living costs and can return to work sooner.
- You need a fast decision. The usual wait is 3 weeks, and you can apply up to 6 months before your course starts.
- Your family prefers a fixed rule. The funds amount and the 28 day rule are written into the Immigration Rules, and an account in a parent's name is allowed with their consent.
- You are single or on a PhD. Taught master's students cannot bring family, so this matters less if you travel alone.
- You hold a 14 year degree plus a master's. Some UK universities, such as Nottingham and Surrey, accept this route on their Pakistan pages, usually with higher grades.
Our guide to UK student visa requirements from Pakistan covers the CAS, TB test and bank statement rules, and the UK Graduate Route guide explains the 18 month change.
Choose Canada if
- You want longer work rights after graduating. A post graduation work permit can run up to 3 years, against 18 months on the UK Graduate visa from 2027.
- You are married and choosing a long master's. A master's of 16 months or longer lets your spouse apply for an open work permit.
- You want a defined route to permanent residence. Canadian work experience can later count under Express Entry, though nothing is automatic.
- You are aiming for a college programme. One year graduate certificates cost around CAD 17,000 to 21,000, though you must check that the field qualifies for a work permit.
- You do not have an IELTS score yet. IRCC sets no test for the study permit, though you will need an approved test later for the work permit.
Our Canada study permit guide covers the PAL, proof of funds and refusal reasons in full.
What mistakes do Pakistani students make when choosing a study visa country?
- Picking Canada for PR alone. IRCC must be satisfied that your main purpose is to study and that you will leave when your permit ends. IRCC lists failing to show this among the common reasons for refusal.
- Using old figures. Canada's funds figure was CAD 22,895 until 31 August 2026, and the Islamabad checklist still mentions CAD 10,000. Use CAD 23,448. UK amounts also rise on 30 November 2026.
- Choosing a college course without checking the field. College graduates need an eligible field of study and CLB 5 for a post graduation work permit. A cheaper course that does not qualify can cost you more later.
- Moving money in at the last minute. UKVI needs the balance held for 28 days in a row. IRCC asks for 12 months of statements and an explanation of any large recent deposit.
- Planning a spouse visa without checking the course. A UK taught master's does not allow dependants, and in Canada a one year master's does not give your spouse an open work permit.
- Taking Canadian immigration advice from unlicensed people. Paid advice must come from a licensed RCIC, a Canadian lawyer or a Quebec notary. You can check any consultant on the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants public register.

Frequently asked questions
Is the UK or Canada better for Pakistani students?
Neither is better for everyone. The UK suits students who want a one year master's, a 3 week decision and a fixed funds rule. Canada suits students who want up to 3 years of post graduation work, a spouse work permit on a 16 month or longer master's, and a route to permanent residence through Express Entry. Your budget, course length and family plans decide.
Which is cheaper, the UK or Canada, for Pakistani students?
It depends on the course. A one year UK master's costs £18,600 at Sheffield Hallam and £41,400 at Manchester in tuition alone. In Canada, a one year college graduate certificate costs around CAD 17,000 to 21,000, and the average international graduate programme is CAD 24,693 a year. Canada's CAD 23,448 living funds figure is about Rs 4.55 million, against about Rs 3.86 million for the UK's £10,539 outside London, at State Bank of Pakistan rates on 13 October 2026.
Is IELTS required for a UK or Canada study visa?
Not always. IRCC sets no language test for a study permit, so your college or university decides, and many accept Duolingo, PTE or TOEFL. You will need an approved test later for a post graduation work permit. For a UK degree you need CEFR B2, shown by an approved SELT such as IELTS for UKVI or by your university's own assessment.
Can I take my spouse to the UK or Canada on a study visa?
In the UK, only if you study a PhD or research degree, or are government sponsored. In Canada, your spouse can apply for an open work permit if you study a master's of 16 months or longer, a doctorate or certain professional programmes. A one year master's in either country does not give your spouse these rights.
How long does a UK or Canada study visa take from Pakistan?
GOV.UK gives 3 weeks as the usual decision time for Student visas applied for from outside the UK, counted from your biometrics appointment. IRCC estimated 7 weeks for study permits from Pakistan, using data updated on 7 October 2026. Canada also needs a PAL first for most students, so start earlier for Canada.
