It depends on budget, time and whether you will learn German. Choose Germany if you want little or no tuition, a research focused two year master's and up to 18 months to find work. Choose the UK if you want a one year master's taught in English, a 3 week study visa decision and entry rules that accept a wider range of CGPAs. Neither guarantees a visa.
How do the Germany and UK study visas compare for a master's?
Figures come from the German Missions in Pakistan, Make it in Germany, DAAD, GOV.UK and university pages listed under Sources, checked in October 2026. Fees are set by each university or German state, so the tuition row uses named examples.
| Factor | Germany (national student visa) | UK (Student visa) |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition | No tuition at most public universities. Semester contribution about €184 (Stuttgart) to €412.30 (Saarland). Non EU tuition of €1,500 a semester in Baden-Württemberg. TUM charges €4,000 or €6,000 a semester, rising to €4,600 or €6,800 from winter 2027/28 | One year master's in data science or computing £18,600 (Sheffield Hallam) to £41,400 (Manchester) |
| Typical length | Four semesters, two years | Usually one year |
| Funds the visa needs | €11,904 for one year in a blocked account, or a formal obligation letter from a sponsor in Germany, or an HEC scholarship | Unpaid first year fees plus £1,171 a month outside London or £1,529 in London, for up to 9 months, held 28 days in a row. From 30 November 2026: £1,203 and £1,570 |
| English test | Set by the university. Usually IELTS Academic or TOEFL iBT: IELTS 6.0 at TU Dresden, 6.5 at TUM, 7.0 at Bonn, Saarland and Stuttgart | CEFR B2 for degree level: an approved SELT such as IELTS for UKVI, or an assessment by your university |
| Work while studying | 140 full days or 280 half days a year, or up to 20 hours a week | Up to 20 hours a week in term and full time in vacations |
| Post study work | Residence permit of up to 18 months to find skilled work, taking any job meanwhile | Graduate visa: 2 years if you apply by 31 December 2026, 18 months from 1 January 2027 |
| Dependants | Spouse can join if they have A1 German and the family has housing and funds | Only PhD or research degree students, or government sponsored students |
| Visa processing time | No published time. You upload documents to the Consular Services Portal, the mission screens them, then offers an appointment. The Missions say demand exceeds capacity | Usually 3 weeks from your biometrics appointment. Priority (usually 5 working days) costs £500 extra where offered |
| Route to permanent residence | Skilled worker permit or EU Blue Card after a job offer. German graduates can apply for a settlement permit after working in Germany for more than two years | Graduate visa, then a sponsored Skilled Worker job. GOV.UK still shows settlement after 5 years, but a 10 year standard has been proposed |
| Typical intake | Winter semester from October. Non EU deadlines usually 15 January to 15 July 2027. The April summer semester has fewer options | September. Some master's courses start in January |
Here is a hypothetical on visa minimums, not a forecast of spending. Say you choose the University of Bonn. Four semester contributions at about €363 come to roughly €1,450, and two years at the blocked account rate of €992 a month come to €23,808, so about €25,300 before health insurance and flights. Our UK cost guide puts a one year UK master's starting in 2027 at roughly £36,000 to £51,000 all in, about Rs 13 to 19 million at the 13 October 2026 rate.
Choose Germany if
- Tuition is your biggest worry. Most public universities charge none, though you must block €11,904 for the first year and pay health insurance, about €120 to €130 a month for students under 30.
- Your bachelor's is a close match. DAAD Pakistan says you need 16 years of education, and German universities check your modules, not just the degree title.
- You will learn German. DAAD Pakistan calls it highly advisable even on an English taught course, and it matters for jobs after graduating.
- You want research and a thesis. Four semesters give more depth than a one year taught course.
- You are married. A spouse can join you with A1 German, housing and funds, which a UK taught master's does not allow.

Choose the UK if
- You want to finish in one year. One year of living costs, and back to work sooner.
- Your CGPA is modest or your degree path is unusual. Surrey's Pakistan page lists a GPA of 2.6 or 2.8 for courses that need a 2:1, and Nottingham and Surrey consider a 14 year degree followed by a master's. Saarland, by contrast, asks for 3.00 out of 4.00 and a top 10% class rank.
- You want an English speaking life and job search. No new language is needed for daily life or the Graduate visa.
- You need a predictable timeline. The usual decision time is 3 weeks, and you can apply up to 6 months before your course.
- You can match fees to your budget. UK tuition ranges widely. In our examples, Sheffield Hallam costs less than half of Manchester.
Our UK Graduate Route guide explains why a 2027 graduate should plan around 18 months.
What mistakes do Pakistani students make when choosing a study visa country?
- Believing Germany is completely free. The semester contribution, blocked account and health insurance are real costs, and Baden-Württemberg and TUM charge tuition.
- Comparing a one year course with a two year one. Germany means two years of living costs and a second year out of full time work. Count both.
- Applying to Germany with a 14 year degree or an unrelated subject. DAAD Pakistan asks for 16 years, and many programmes reject a weak subject match.
- Paying anyone for a German visa appointment. The German Missions in Pakistan say agencies can never provide appointments and that any such claim is fraudulent.
- Missing UK paperwork timings. Money must sit in the account 28 days in a row, and some science and technology courses need an ATAS certificate, which takes at least 30 working days.
- Missing early German deadlines. The 15 July date is common, but some master's programmes close on 15 January or 1 March.

Frequently asked questions
Is Germany or the UK better for a master's for Pakistani students?
Neither is better for everyone. Germany suits students with a strong, closely related 16 year degree who want low tuition and will learn German. The UK suits students who want a one year course in English, a 3 week decision and more flexible entry grades. Your CGPA, budget, subject and family plans decide which fits.
Is a master's in Germany cheaper than in the UK?
Usually, on tuition. Most German public universities charge only a semester contribution of about €184 to €412, while one year UK master's fees run from £18,600 to £41,400 in our examples. Germany still needs €11,904 a year in a blocked account and two years of living costs. Baden-Württemberg charges €1,500 a semester, and TUM charges €4,000 or €6,000.
Can I do a master's in Germany or the UK without IELTS?
In the UK, often yes, because your university can assess your English itself at degree level, as long as it equals B2. In Germany it is rare: most English taught programmes ask for IELTS Academic or TOEFL iBT, and Bonn says this applies even to Pakistani degrees taught fully in English. Check each programme page.
Which is better for jobs after a master's, Germany or the UK?
Both give similar time to job hunt for 2027 graduates: up to 18 months in Germany and 18 months on the UK Graduate visa from 1 January 2027. In Germany, speaking German makes the search easier. In the UK, a skilled job needs a licensed sponsor and a salary threshold. Via Nova does not arrange jobs or job offers.
Can I take my wife to Germany or the UK on a study visa?
In Germany, generally yes: your spouse needs A1 German, and the family needs housing and enough funds. The German Missions in Pakistan publish no fixed family amount. In the UK, a taught master's does not allow dependants unless you are government sponsored. PhD and research degree students can bring family.
