It depends on your budget, how long you want to study and what you plan after graduating. Choose the USA if you want a longer master's with assistantship options, up to 3 years of work after a STEM degree, and your spouse with you. Choose the UK if you want a one year master's, a fixed funds rule and a quicker study visa decision. Neither country guarantees a visa.

How do the USA and UK study visas compare in 2026?

Every figure below comes from the official or university source listed at the end, checked in October 2026. Both countries let each university set its own fees, so the tuition row gives named examples rather than a national figure.

FactorUSA (F1 study visa)UK (Student visa)
TuitionCommunity colleges $9,576 (Valencia) to $12,330 (Green River) a year. Public MS Computer Science about $14,900 (Buffalo) to $22,067 (Arizona State) per semester, Fall 2026One year master's in data science or computing £18,600 (Sheffield Hallam) to £41,400 (Manchester). BSc Computer Science £17,975 (Greenwich) to £39,700 (Manchester) a year
Funds the visa needsNo fixed figure. Readily available funds for the full first year cost on your I-20, tuition plus living, and a reliable source for later yearsUnpaid first year fees plus £1,171 a month outside London or £1,529 in London, for up to 9 months, held 28 days in a row. From 30 November 2026: £1,203 and £1,570
English testThe visa rules name no test. Each university decides, and many accept TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo or PTECEFR B2 for degree level: an approved SELT such as IELTS for UKVI, or an assessment by your university
Work while studyingOn campus, up to 20 hours a week in session. Off campus work is limitedUp to 20 hours a week in term and full time in vacations, for degree level students
Post study workOPT up to 12 months, plus 24 months for eligible STEM degreesGraduate visa: 2 years if you apply by 31 December 2026, 18 months from 1 January 2027, 3 years after a PhD
DependantsSpouse and children on F2 visas. F2 spouses cannot workOnly PhD or research degree students, or government sponsored students
Visa processing timeNext student interview about 2 months away in Islamabad and 1 month in Karachi (State Department table of 17 September 2026). After approval, usually 5 working daysUsually 3 weeks from your biometrics appointment. Priority (usually 5 working days) costs £500 extra where offered
Route to permanent residenceNo direct route. Most graduates who stay need an employer: OPT, then an H-1B through an annual selection, then an employment based green cardGraduate visa, then a sponsored Skilled Worker job. GOV.UK still shows settlement after 5 years, but a 10 year standard has been proposed
Typical intakeFall (August or September). Some programmes also admit in Spring (January)September. Some master's courses start in January

Two things the table cannot show. First, length: a UK taught master's usually takes one year, while a US master's is often 30 credits over 1.5 to 2 years, so you pay US living costs for longer. Second, interviews: every F1 applicant in Pakistan attends an in person interview in Islamabad or Karachi, while UK decisions rest mainly on documents, although many universities hold a pre CAS interview and UKVI can call you for a credibility interview.

Choose the USA if

  • You want depth and funding options. US departments offer teaching and research assistantships, and some include a tuition award. They are competitive and not guaranteed. UK master's funding is more often a fee discount, such as the scholarships of up to £3,000 that Greenwich and Sheffield Hallam advertise.
  • Your degree is in STEM. OPT plus the STEM extension can give up to 3 years of US work experience after one degree. Watch the proposed OPT fee, which is not final.
  • You are married. Your spouse and children can come on F2 visas, though your spouse cannot work.
  • You can show a full first year. The officer wants readily available funds for the whole I-20 figure. A plan to get a loan, or to earn money in your first year, does not count.
  • You are ready to explain your plan in person. Our USA student visa requirements for Pakistan covers the I-20, SEVIS fee, DS-160 and interview, and our F1 visa service runs mock interviews.

Choose the UK if

  • You want to finish in one year. A shorter course means one year of living costs and a quicker return to work in Pakistan or abroad.
  • Your family wants a clear funds rule. The amount and the 28 day rule are written into the Immigration Rules, so you know exactly what to keep in the account.
  • You would rather avoid a separate test. At degree level your university can assess your English itself, as long as it equals B2.
  • Your timeline is tight. The usual decision time is 3 weeks, and you can apply up to 6 months before your course starts.
  • You are single, or on a PhD. Taught master's students cannot bring family, so this rule matters less if you travel alone.

Plan the Graduate visa around 18 months if you finish in 2027, and remember you must apply from inside the UK. Our guides to UK student visa requirements and the UK Graduate Route explain both.

What mistakes do Pakistani students make when choosing a study visa country?

  1. Comparing tuition, not total cost. A £18,600 one year master's and a two year US master's at $15,000 a semester are not like for like. Add living costs for the full length of the course.
  2. Treating the bank statement as a one day balance. UKVI checks that money sat in the account for 28 days in a row. A US officer looks at where the money came from, and a sudden large deposit with no history raises questions.
  3. Choosing for post study work alone. The UK Graduate visa shortens on 1 January 2027, and DHS has proposed new OPT fees. Via Nova does not arrange jobs, and no consultant can promise one.
  4. Planning to take a spouse on a UK taught master's. It is not allowed unless you are government sponsored. In the USA it is allowed, but the F2 spouse cannot work.
  5. Ignoring the 16 year rule. Both countries usually expect a four year BS for a master's. With a 14 year BA or BSc, check each university's Pakistan entry page before you pay any application fee.
  6. Letting someone else pick the university. US officers ask why you chose your school, and UK credibility interviews ask the same. "My agent chose it" is a weak answer in both.

Frequently asked questions

Is the USA or the UK better for Pakistani students?

Neither is better for everyone. The USA suits students who want a longer master's, assistantship options, up to 3 years of STEM work after graduating and a spouse with them. The UK suits students who want a one year master's, a fixed funds rule and a 3 week visa decision. Your budget, CGPA, subject and family plans decide which fits you.

Which is cheaper for Pakistani students, the USA or the UK?

It depends on the university and course length. As of October 2026, UK one year master's fees run from £18,600 at Sheffield Hallam to £41,400 at Manchester. Public US universities charge about $14,900 to $22,067 a semester for an MS in Computer Science, usually over 1.5 to 2 years. A one year UK course often costs less in total because you pay living costs for one year.

Is it easier to get a UK or US study visa from Pakistan?

No official source ranks them. The US decision rests on an in person interview where you show you are a genuine student with enough money and plans to leave. The UK decision rests mainly on documents: a CAS, funds held 28 days, English and a TB test. Your chances depend on how well your own file meets each set of rules.

Can I work after studying in the UK or USA?

Yes, in both, for a limited time. The UK Graduate visa lasts 2 years if you apply by 31 December 2026 and 18 months from 1 January 2027. In the USA, OPT gives up to 12 months, plus 24 more for eligible STEM degrees. A DHS proposal of 8 October 2026 would add OPT fees, but it is not a rule yet.

Do I need IELTS for a USA or UK study visa?

Not always. US visa rules name no English test, and each university decides what it accepts, often TOEFL, Duolingo, PTE or IELTS. For a UK degree course you need CEFR B2, shown by an approved SELT such as IELTS for UKVI or by your university's own assessment. Check each course page before booking a test.
