Pakistani students can do a master's in Germany taught fully in English, usually with no tuition at public universities outside Baden-Württemberg and some Bavarian universities. You need 16 years of education, a related bachelor's, an English test such as IELTS, and often a uni-assist check. Most programmes last four semesters. For the visa you show €11,904 in a blocked account for 2026, and after graduating you can stay up to 18 months to find work.
Who is an English taught master's in Germany right for?
It suits Pakistani graduates who want a research focused degree at low cost, especially in computer science, data science, engineering and the natural sciences. German public universities are strict about subject fit, so it works best when your bachelor's closely matches the master's.
It suits you less if you need a one year course, if your degree is in an unrelated field, or if you are not willing to learn German for life and work outside the classroom.
How do you find English taught programmes on the DAAD database?
Use the DAAD International Programmes database, run by the German Academic Exchange Service:
- Choose Master's degree as the course type.
- Set the language to English only. On 14 October 2026 this gave 1,589 programmes for 2026/2027.
- Use the Tuition Fees filter. "No fees" gave 920 programmes.
- Open each listing, then check the university's own page for deadlines, documents and fees, because DAAD entries can lag. For example, DAAD still showed an older semester fee for Saarland University than the university's own page.
Look for the application route on every programme page: direct to the university, a full uni-assist application, or a uni-assist VPD.
What are the entry requirements for Pakistani students?
16 years or 14 years of education?
DAAD Pakistan says you must have completed 16 years of education (MSc, MA, BEng or BS Honours) before applying for a master's in Germany. A four year BS meets this. A two year BA or BSc alone does not. Our guide to 14 year degrees for a master's abroad covers the routes from there.
Subject fit, grades and tests
German universities check your modules, not just your degree title. Bonn's MSc Computer Science, for example, lists minimum credits in maths, algorithms, programming and a thesis. Some programmes also ask for the GRE from Pakistani applicants, which many students do not expect.
English proof
Most programmes want IELTS Academic or TOEFL iBT. A letter saying your degree was taught in English is usually not enough. Bonn states that even if your whole bachelor's in Pakistan was in English, you still need a test certificate. Our English test preparation classes cover IELTS and TOEFL.
Which English taught master's programmes can Pakistani students apply to?
Here are six programmes in five states, checked on each university's own pages on 14 October 2026. All last four semesters.

A few details matter for Pakistani applicants:
- English scores differ. TU Dresden asks for IELTS 6.0 and RWTH sets B2 level, while Bonn, Saarland and Stuttgart ask for IELTS 7.0 and TUM for 6.5.
- Stuttgart names Pakistan. It wants the Higher Education Commission stamp on all degree certificates, and accepts a bachelor's of at least three years.
- Saarland is selective. It asks for a CGPA of 75% or 3.00 out of 4.00 and a top 10% class ranking.
- TUM only accepts computer science bachelor's for this programme, and runs a two stage aptitude assessment.

Are English taught master's in Germany free?
At most public universities, tuition is free, but three costs remain:
- Semester contribution. Every student pays it, and at some universities it includes a public transport ticket. In the table it ranges from about €184 at Stuttgart to €412.30 at Saarland.
- Baden-Württemberg. The state ministry says non EU students pay €1,500 per semester, a rule in place since winter semester 2017/18. The ministry page announces no change as of October 2026.
- Bavaria. TUM has charged non EU students since winter semester 2024/25. Its master's fees are usually €4,000 or €6,000 per semester now, and rise to €4,600 or €6,800 for new students from winter semester 2027/28.

How do uni-assist and VPD work for Pakistani applicants?
uni-assist checks international certificates for its member universities. Your university decides admission, not uni-assist.
- Full application. uni-assist checks your documents and forwards your application to the university. TU Dresden uses this route.
- VPD (preliminary review documentation). uni-assist rates your qualifications in the German grading system and issues a certificate. You then apply to the university yourself and upload the VPD. TUM uses this route.
- Timing. uni-assist says a VPD usually takes 4 to 6 weeks and stays valid for one year.
- Fees. €75 for the first programme and €30 for each additional one in a semester, the same for standard and VPD applications.
For Pakistan, uni-assist asks for your Matric and Intermediate certificates with marks, your degree and transcript with HEC attestation stamps, and a statement of the minimum CGPA or percentage your university needs to award the degree. Our guide to HEC attestation for study abroad explains the stamps.
Do you need an APS certificate? uni-assist lists APS offices in China, Vietnam and India, and the German Missions in Pakistan do not ask for one. Bonn, Saarland and Stuttgart mention APS only for those countries (Stuttgart adds Mongolia).
What are the visa and blocked account rules?
After admission, you apply for a national student visa through the Consular Services Portal. The German Missions in Pakistan say the blocked account requirement has been €992 a month, or €11,904 a year, for applications made since 1 January 2025, and Make it in Germany confirms €11,904 for 2026. The amount is tied to German student support rates, so check it again before you transfer money. Our guide to the Germany student visa appointment from Pakistan walks through the portal and documents.
Can you work in Germany after a master's in English?
As of October 2026, Make it in Germany sets these rules:
- While studying: up to 140 full days or 280 half days a year, or up to 20 hours a week.
- After graduating: a residence permit of up to 18 months to look for skilled work, during which you may take any job.
- Once hired: you can switch to a skilled worker permit or an EU Blue Card. Graduates of German universities can apply for a settlement permit after working in Germany for more than two years.
German is the part many students underestimate. DAAD Pakistan says that even if you study in English, it is highly advisable to learn enough German to communicate. A DAAD survey published on 15 July 2025 found that only a third of international students feel well prepared to start a career in Germany, and DAAD said German language support matters for later entry into the labour market. In Pakistan, DAAD points to courses at the Goethe-Institut Karachi, Annemarie Schimmel Haus in Lahore and NUML Islamabad. Start during your degree, not after it.

Frequently asked questions
Can I do a master's in Germany in English without IELTS?
Rarely. Most English taught programmes ask for IELTS Academic or TOEFL iBT, and most do not accept a letter saying your degree was taught in English. Bonn says this applies to Pakistani degrees taught fully in English. TUM is one exception that accepts proof of at least 50% English taught study, under its programme rules.
Is a master's in Germany free for Pakistani students?
At most public universities there is no tuition, but you pay a semester contribution, around €184 to €412 at the six universities above. Baden-Württemberg charges non EU students €1,500 per semester, and TUM's master's fees rise to €4,600 or €6,800 per semester from winter 2027/28. You also need €11,904 in a blocked account for 2026.
Do Pakistani students need uni-assist for Germany?
Only if your university uses it. TU Dresden asks for a full uni-assist application, and TUM asks for a uni-assist VPD. RWTH Aachen, Bonn, Saarland and Stuttgart take applications directly. uni-assist charges €75 for the first programme and €30 for each extra one in the same semester.
Is GRE required for a master's in Germany?
It depends on the programme. TUM's Data Engineering and Analytics asks Pakistani applicants for a Quantitative score of 164, RWTH Aachen's Data Science wants Quantitative above the 75th percentile, and Saarland requires a GRE with no minimum score. Bonn does not require it, and TU Dresden counts it in your favour without requiring it.
Can I stay in Germany after my master's?
Yes. After graduating you can apply for a residence permit of up to 18 months to look for skilled work, and you may take any job during that time. Once you find a qualified job, you can switch to a skilled worker permit or an EU Blue Card. German language skills make the job search much easier.
