How is the IELTS overall band calculated?
Add your four section bands and divide by four. Then round the result the IELTS way:
- an average ending in less than .25 rounds down to the whole band below;
- an average from .25 to just under .75 rounds to the half band;
- an average of .75 or more rounds up to the next whole band.

What IELTS score do you need for a study visa?
Universities set their own entry scores, and they are often higher than the visa minimum. These are the visa level figures that matter for students from Pakistan, as of October 2026:

Why your lowest band matters
Many rules look at each skill, not only the overall band. The UK's test rules and Australia's skilled migration points both need the score in every skill. A 6.5 overall with 5.0 in Writing can still fall short. Use the calculator to see your lowest band beside your overall score.
How can you raise your IELTS band?
- Find your weakest skill. One low band can pull down the average and fail a per skill rule.
- Use One Skill Retake. In Pakistan, IDP offers it after a full IELTS on computer test, within 60 days and once per test, so you can resit one skill instead of all four.
- Practise under test conditions. Timed mock tests show where marks are lost.

Is an IELTS average of 6.25 rounded up?
Yes. An average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band, so 6.25 becomes 6.5. An average ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band, so 6.75 becomes 7.0.
What IELTS score do I need for a UK study visa?
If your university assesses your English itself at degree level, it decides. If you need a test, IELTS for UKVI needs 5.5 in each skill for degree level and 4.0 in each skill below degree level, as of October 2026.
Is IELTS General Training accepted for an Australian student visa?
Yes. Australia's rules accept both IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training for the student visa, with an overall score of 6.0 for direct entry. Your university may still ask for Academic.
How long is an IELTS result valid for a study visa?
IELTS recommends treating results as valid for two years. The UK, Australia and Ireland all expect a result from the two years before you apply or start your course.
Does this calculator work for IELTS for UKVI?
Yes. IELTS for UKVI uses the same band scale and the same rounding rules as IELTS Academic and General Training.
