Every study visa from Pakistan needs a valid passport, your admission document, proof of funds, academic certificates and usually an English test result. The UK adds a TB test, Canada's Islamabad office a police certificate and 12 months of bank statements, and Germany a blocked account. Below is one checklist for six countries as of October 2026, plus how to get each Pakistani document.
Which documents does every study visa need?
Whatever the country, five things sit at the centre of your file:
- A valid passport, with enough validity for that country's rule.
- Your admission document: I-20 (USA), CAS (UK), letter of acceptance and PAL (Canada), CoE (Australia), admission letter (Germany) or letter of acceptance (Ireland).
- Proof of funds that matches what the country asks for, with a clear source.
- Academic documents: Matric, Intermediate, degree and transcripts.
- English evidence, unless your university or the visa rules say you are exempt.
Everything else depends on the country. If you have not reached the visa stage yet, start with our guide on how to apply for a study visa from Pakistan.

Which Pakistani documents do you need, and how do you get them?
Passport and CNIC
Renew your passport early if it falls short of the rule for your country. DGIP lets you renew online, or you can apply at a Regional Passport Office. Keep a copy of your CNIC, front and back. Canada asks for it, and HEC uses it for attestation.
Family Registration Certificate, birth and marriage certificates
A NADRA Family Registration Certificate (FRC) lists your family members in one document. It is the simplest proof that your sponsor is your parent, which matters most for the UK, where funds in a parent's account need proof of the relationship. You can apply at a NADRA Registration Centre or online through NADRA's Pak Identity service.
A computerised birth certificate comes from your union council and is registered with NADRA. Married students need the union council's marriage registration certificate as well as the Nikah Nama. Ireland lists birth and marriage certificates as examples of how you are linked to a sponsor.
Matric, Intermediate, degree and transcripts
Keep originals and clear copies. Attestation is needed only when a university or embassy asks:
- IBCC attests Matric and Intermediate certificates, and issues equivalence for O and A levels.
- HEC attests degrees and transcripts. Since 11 May 2026, it is fully online at Rs 3,000 per document.
- MOFA adds an apostille only if a country or university asks, and apostilles do not operate between Pakistan and Germany.
Our guide to HEC attestation for study abroad explains each step and the order to follow.
Police character certificate
Canada's Islamabad office asks for a police certificate from each country where you have lived for six months or more since age 18. IRCC says each province has its own procedure. In Punjab, apply at any Police Khidmat Markaz with your original CNIC, passport and an affidavit. The listed fee is Rs 500 and the stated turnaround is 3 working days.
Bank statements and maintenance letters
Ask your branch for statements on bank letterhead, stamped and signed. A maintenance certificate confirms the current balance and how long the account has been held, and it is a useful extra. It does not replace statements, and Australia says a single day balance certificate does not show how funds grew. Our bank statement for study visa hub covers each country's rules.
FBR tax returns
If a parent is sponsoring you, their income tax returns filed with FBR through IRIS show where the money came from. A sponsor on FBR's Active Taxpayers List shows a filing record. Salaried sponsors should add salary slips and an employer letter. Ireland, for example, gives an employer letter plus 3 recent payslips as accepted evidence.
Property documents
Property shows family standing and can explain rental income, but it is supporting evidence only. Every country here assesses money you can actually use, so a house or plot does not count as funds unless it has been sold and the money is in the bank, with the sale deed to prove it. Our guide to the sponsor letter for a study visa lists what to attach from a sponsor.
Do documents need translation or certification?
Yes, if they are not in English. The UK wants a certified translation with the translator's details. Canada wants a certified translation of any document not in English or French. Ireland wants a full certified translation of anything not in English or Irish. Urdu documents, such as a Nikah Nama, need a translation.
Ireland is strict about originals. It does not accept photocopies except where stated, and internet bank printouts count only if the bank notarises every page and adds a letter confirming them. Letters from a business must be on headed paper with a landline number, and Ireland does not accept Yahoo or Hotmail addresses.
Which document mistakes delay or sink a study visa?
- Names that do not match. Your name should be spelt the same on your passport, CNIC, certificates and admission document.
- Unexplained deposits. Ireland and Canada both ask you to explain large recent deposits.
- Documents that expire. A short passport or an expired PAL can stop an application.
- Undeclared refusals. Ireland refuses applications that hide a past refusal, and other countries ask the same question.
- Missing upload items. Germany keeps your registration on hold until your degree certificates, transcripts and tuition proof are uploaded.
- Borrowed or altered papers. False documents lead to refusal, and in Ireland can block you from getting a visa for 5 years.
Not sure where you stand?
A checklist tells you what to collect, not whether your file is strong. Send your grades, your budget, your sponsor's situation and your target country to a Via Nova counsellor on WhatsApp at +92 316 4448062. You will get an honest list of what is missing for your case through our study visa service. For Canada, personalised immigration advice is given through Via Nova's licensed RCIC partner, a regulated Canadian immigration consultant. Only the embassy or visa office decides your visa.
Frequently asked questions
What documents are required for a study visa from Pakistan?
The core set is a valid passport, your admission document (I-20, CAS, letter of acceptance, CoE or admission letter), proof of funds, academic certificates and English evidence. Then add the country's extras: a TB test for the UK, a police certificate and medical for Canada, OSHC for Australia, a blocked account for Germany and private medical insurance for Ireland.
How many months of bank statement are required for a study visa?
It depends on the country. The UK needs the money held for 28 days in a row, ending within 31 days of applying. Canada's Islamabad office asks for 12 months of statements, and Ireland for 6 months. The USA and Australia set no fixed number of months but want to see how the money built up.
Is HEC attestation required for a study visa?
Not usually for the visa. The official document lists for the USA, UK, Canada, Australia and Ireland do not ask for it. Some universities do, and Germany has its own rules for certified copies. Ask your university before paying Rs 3,000 per document to HEC.
Is a police character certificate required for a student visa from Pakistan?
For Canada, yes: the Islamabad checklist asks for one from each country where you have lived six months or more since age 18. Australia may ask for one. The US, UK, German and Irish student visa lists do not include one. In Punjab, apply at a Police Khidmat Markaz.
Do I need an FRC for a study visa?
No country lists it as compulsory, but it is the easiest way to prove that a sponsor is your parent. The UK requires proof of the relationship when you rely on a parent's account, and Australia, Canada, Ireland and the USA all look at how you are related to the person paying.
