Most visit visa refusals from Pakistan come down to one finding: the officer was not satisfied that you are a genuine visitor who will leave on time. Each country words it differently: paragraph V 4.2 in the UK, Article 32 of the Schengen Visa Code, section 214(b) in the USA and paragraph 179(b) in Canada. Here is what each ground means and what to fix before you reapply.
Why are visit visas refused from Pakistan?
The wording differs, but every officer asks the same things: will you leave on time, is the purpose real, can you pay, and are your documents true. Rules as of October 2026:
| Country | Main ground in the letter | What it usually means | Appeal or review |
|---|---|---|---|
| UK | V 4.2, genuine visitor | Doubts about leaving, purpose or funds | No appeal unless human rights; no administrative review |
| Schengen | Visa Code Article 32, standard form | Purpose, reliability or intention to leave in doubt | Appeal under the refusing country's law |
| USA | INA 214(b) | You did not show you qualify as a temporary visitor | No appeal; apply again |
| Canada | IRPR 179(b) | Officer not satisfied you will leave | Federal Court review with leave, or apply again |
| Australia | Visitor visa criteria | Not satisfied you are a genuine temporary visitor | The letter says if review exists |
What does a UK visit visa refusal under V 4.2 mean?
Paragraph V 4.2 of Appendix V: Visitor says you must satisfy the officer that you are a genuine visitor, which means you:
- will leave the UK at the end of your visit;
- will not live in the UK through frequent or successive visits;
- are coming for a permitted purpose;
- will not work or do other prohibited activities;
- have sufficient funds for all reasonable costs without working or claiming public funds.
The caseworker guidance (version 18.0, 8 October 2026) lists reasons for doubt: few ties at home while several relatives live in the UK, differences between your statements and your sponsor's, information that cannot be verified, and reasons for the visit that are not credible. Past travel that followed the rules, especially to the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland or Schengen countries, can help. For first time travellers, officers rely on other evidence.
UK visit visa refused: what next?
You cannot appeal unless your refusal letter says it raised a human rights claim, and the Visitor route is not on the list of routes eligible for administrative review. The usual step is a new application that answers each reason in the letter. The fee is not refunded on refusal, and a new six month Standard Visitor application costs £135 as of October 2026. Judicial review exists only for legal errors and needs a UK lawyer.
Deception is different. If UKVI decides you gave false documents or information, or hid relevant facts, refusal is mandatory and a 10 year ban runs from the date of refusal. Our post on UK student visa refusal reasons explains these rules in more detail, and our UK visit visa guide covers a fresh application.
What do the Schengen visa rejection reasons mean?
Every Schengen refusal uses the same standard form from Annex VI of the Visa Code, with numbered reasons. The ones that matter for most visitors:
- Reason 2, purpose not justified: your bookings, itinerary or invitation did not explain the trip.
- Reason 3, insufficient means of subsistence: your funds did not cover the days requested and the return, or were not shown properly.
- Reason 10, information not reliable: something in the file did not match or could not be checked.
- Reason 12, doubts about documents: a document looked altered, or its contents looked untrue.
- Reason 13, doubts about your intention to leave: your ties to Pakistan looked weak for the trip you asked for.
- Reason 16, no adequate travel medical insurance: the German Missions in Pakistan, for example, require at least €30,000 of cover valid in all Schengen countries.
Can you appeal a Schengen refusal?
Yes. Article 32(3) of the Visa Code gives you the right to appeal under the national law of the country that refused you, and the form must say where to appeal and by when. Germany, for example, ended its informal remonstration procedure on 1 July 2025: you can file a complaint at the Administrative Court in Berlin, in German and with court costs, or apply again at any time. Every Schengen consulate checks the shared Visa Information System on each application, so be ready to explain a past refusal. Our Schengen visa guide covers choosing the right country.
What does a US B1/B2 refusal under 214(b) mean?
Section 214(b) of the Immigration and Nationality Act presumes every B1/B2 applicant is an intending immigrant. USTravelDocs Pakistan says you overcome this by showing:
- a temporary purpose, such as business, tourism or medical treatment;
- a plan to stay for a specific, limited period;
- evidence of funds to cover your expenses;
- a residence outside the US and ties that will ensure your return.
Fail any one and the refusal falls under 214(b). The Foreign Affairs Manual adds that offering to leave a spouse or child behind does not overcome doubts.
A 214(b) refusal is not permanent. There is no waiver or appeal, but you can apply again with a new DS-160 and fee, and the manual says the refusal can be overcome later. Reapply when something real has changed, such as a longer work record. A finding of misrepresentation under 212(a)(6)(C)(i) is a permanent ineligibility. Our USA visit visa guide covers the interview.
Why are Canada visitor visas refused?
Paragraph 179(b) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations allows a visitor visa only if the officer is satisfied that you will leave Canada by the end of your authorized stay. Refusal letters reviewed by the Federal Court in 2025 show the usual factors listed under it:
- you do not have significant family ties outside Canada;
- the purpose of your visit is not consistent with a temporary stay;
- your assets and financial situation are insufficient to support the stated purpose of travel.
Since 29 July 2025, IRCC sends the officer's decision notes with most visitor visa refusals, so read them before doing anything else. You can apply again with new information that answers those points, or ask the Federal Court for leave and judicial review within 60 days of a decision made outside Canada. Misrepresentation makes you inadmissible for five years. For study permits, see Canada study visa refusal reasons; for a fresh visitor file, our Canada visit visa guide. How do Australia visitor visa refusals work?
For the Visitor visa (subclass 600), Home Affairs says you must intend to visit only, stay temporarily and obey your visa conditions, have enough money for your stay, and not work. A refusal letter tells you why you were refused and whether you have a right to review. Migration lawyers note that tourist stream refusals made outside Australia without a sponsor have no merits review, so a stronger new application is the usual route. The Australian High Commission in Pakistan warns that false information or documents can bring a ban of up to 10 years and affect visas for other countries. See our Australia visit visa guide.
What should you change before you reapply?
- List every reason. Read the letter, and the decision notes if you have them, line by line.
- Fix the reason, not the page count. Funds doubted: show their source. Ties doubted: add an employer letter with approved leave or business records. Purpose doubted: give a clear plan or invitation.
- Declare every past refusal. The German Missions in Pakistan say failing to disclose a refusal counts as fraud and is automatic grounds for refusal.
- Make your story match your host's. Dates, relationship and who pays must be the same on both sides.
- Ask for a trip that fits your life. A short, specific visit is easier to believe than a long, open one.
- Never submit a document you cannot stand behind. A bank letter or job letter arranged by an agent can turn a simple refusal into a ban.
A visit visa never allows you to work, and Via Nova does not arrange jobs, job offers or work visas.

Frequently asked questions
Can I apply again after a UK visit visa refusal?
Yes. An ordinary refusal under V 4.2 carries no waiting period, and you can make a new application with a new fee, £135 for a six month Standard Visitor visa as of October 2026. Answer every reason in the refusal letter with new evidence. The exception is deception: a refusal for false documents or information carries a 10 year ban.
What does 214(b) mean for a B1/B2 visa?
It means the officer was not satisfied that you qualify as a temporary visitor, usually because you did not show a home in Pakistan you will return to, a limited stay or a genuine purpose. It is not a permanent bar. You can reapply with a new DS-160 and fee, ideally once something important has changed.
Can I appeal a Schengen visa rejection from Pakistan?
Yes. The Visa Code gives a right to appeal under the law of the country that refused you, and the refusal form must name the authority and the deadline. Procedures differ: Germany, for example, ended its remonstration procedure on 1 July 2025, leaving a court complaint in Berlin or a new application.
Does a visa refusal from one country affect other applications?
A refusal is not a ban, but most application forms ask about refusals by any country, and you must declare them truthfully. UK guidance lets officers consider refused entry elsewhere, and Schengen consulates share the Visa Information System. Hiding a refusal does far more damage than the refusal itself.
How long should I wait before reapplying after a visit visa refusal?
For ordinary refusals in the UK, Schengen, USA, Canada and Australia, no fixed waiting period applies. Bans come from deception or immigration breaches, not from an ordinary refusal. Wait until you can show something new that answers the refusal reasons, because the same file usually brings the same result.
