To get a Schengen visa from Pakistan, apply to the embassy of the country where you will spend the most days, or the one you enter first if stays are equal. As of October 2026 the fee is EUR 90 for adults, you need travel medical insurance of at least EUR 30,000, and you apply between six months and 15 days before travel.

What is a Schengen visit visa?

A Schengen visa is a short stay visa for tourism, visiting family or friends, or business meetings. One visa covers all 29 Schengen countries, including Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands and Switzerland, for up to 90 days in any 180 day period. Pakistani passport holders need one before they travel.

A Schengen visit visa does not allow you to work. Via Nova does not arrange jobs, job offers or work visas.

Which Schengen country should you apply to from Pakistan?

People often ask which Schengen country is easiest for Pakistanis. There is no honest ranking. The EU Visa Code decides where you apply:

  • One country only: apply to that country.
  • Several countries: apply to your main destination, judged by the number of days or the purpose of your stay.
  • Equal stays: apply to the country you will enter first.

Say you plan four nights in Paris and six nights in Rome. Italy is your main destination, so you apply to Italy. If you apply to a consulate that is not responsible for your trip, it must return your file, refund the fee and tell you which consulate is responsible. Border guards can also refuse entry if you cannot show the purpose of your trip, even with a valid visa. Plan the real trip, then apply to the right country.

Where do you apply in Pakistan?

Each embassy runs its own booking route. These were checked on the official embassy pages on 15 October 2026.

CountryHow you apply from Pakistan
GermanyRegister on the embassy's online waiting list, which carries no charge. Islamabad covers Islamabad, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Karachi covers Sindh and Balochistan
ItalyBook through BLS-Intiana. The Multan and Faisalabad centres closed on 6 September 2026, leaving Islamabad and Lahore for the Embassy's area
NetherlandsVFS Global in Islamabad, Karachi or Lahore. Book online yourself, not through an intermediary

FranceComplete the form on France-Visas and book through AEG; interviews and biometrics happen only at the French Embassy in Islamabad. See our France visit visa guide

The German Embassy warns that anyone asking for money to put you on its waiting list is a fraudster.

How to apply for a Schengen visa from Pakistan, step by step

  1. Fix your plan. Decide your dates, cities and main destination.
  2. Open that embassy's page. Check its booking route and checklist.
  3. Book or register early. You can apply up to six months ahead, and Germany asks you to book as soon as you know your exact dates.
  4. Fill in the form. Keep the reference number.
  5. Buy insurance and gather documents. Match every date to your itinerary.
  6. Attend in person. Fingerprints are taken from age 12, unless you gave them in the last 59 months. Pay the fee.
  7. Track your application. Collect your passport when it is ready.
  8. Travel with copies. Border officers can check your documents again.

How much is the Schengen visa fee in 2026, and how long does it take?

The fee is EUR 90 for adults and EUR 45 for children aged 6 to under 12, as of October 2026. Germany and Switzerland take it in cash in Pakistani rupees at the current exchange rate. France says its fee is not refunded if you are refused, so assume the same unless the embassy says otherwise. Visa centre service charges are extra: the Netherlands says you always pay VFS Global's costs. Spain's embassy page still showed the old EUR 80 fee on 15 October 2026, so confirm the amount when you book.

The legal decision time is 15 calendar days, extendable to 45. Germany says short stay visas usually take about 14 calendar days, with longer waits in peak season. Switzerland notes that some nationalities need consultation with other Schengen states, which can add up to 14 calendar days. Appointment waits come on top.

What travel insurance do you need for a Schengen visa?

Under the Visa Code, your policy must:

  • cover at least EUR 30,000;
  • pay for emergency medical care, hospital treatment and repatriation for medical reasons or death;
  • be valid in every Schengen country for your whole stay;
  • in principle, be bought in your country of residence.

For a multiple entry visa, cover your first trip and sign the form's statement about future trips. The German Embassy links a list of Pakistani insurers that meet Schengen rules. The Swiss Embassy suggests a policy "valid on first entry" for a set number of days, so a flight change does not break your cover.

Bank statement and sponsor: what do embassies want to see?

The Visa Code asks for proof of your purpose, accommodation, enough money for the stay and return, and your intention to leave. No single EU wide minimum balance applies. What officers look for is income that makes sense: Switzerland, for example, wants your monthly salary visible in your statements. A large deposit just before you apply raises questions unless you can explain it.

If someone abroad is hosting or paying, Germany accepts a formal letter of obligation from the local foreigners office, no older than six months, or an informal invitation with the host's passport and residence documents. Our guides to bank statements for a visit visa and writing an invitation letter explain both in detail.

What are EES and ETIAS?

EES (Entry/Exit System) registers non EU visitors at the external border. On your first entry, officers take your fingerprints and a photo of your face, and your passport is no longer stamped. It has been fully operational since 10 April 2026, and it applies to Pakistani visa holders.

ETIAS is a travel authorisation only for travellers who do not need a visa. As of October 2026 it is not yet operating. Pakistani passport holders need a Schengen visa, so ETIAS does not apply to them.

Why are Schengen visas refused for Pakistani applicants?

The Visa Code lists the grounds. A visa is refused if you:

  • present a false travel document;
  • do not justify the purpose and conditions of your stay;
  • cannot show enough money for the stay and the return;
  • have already used 90 days in the current 180 day period;
  • have no valid travel medical insurance;
  • raise reasonable doubts about your documents, your statements or your intention to leave.

You receive a standard form showing the reasons, and you can appeal under that country's law. Switzerland allows 30 days to appeal. Germany ended its remonstration procedure on 1 July 2025, and a refused applicant can submit a new application at any time. Read common visit visa refusal reasons before you reapply.

Frequently asked questions

How much bank balance is required for a Schengen visa from Pakistan?

The EU sets no single minimum. You must show enough money for your whole stay and your return. Germany asks for six months of bank statements and three months of salary slips, while Switzerland asks for three months of statements with a balance confirmation letter. Regular income, an explained source of funds and a balance that fits your trip matter more than one large figure.

Which Schengen country is easiest to get a visa from Pakistan?

None, and choosing one for that reason can backfire. You must apply to your main destination, meaning the country of your longest stay or main purpose, or the first country you enter if stays are equal. A consulate that is not responsible returns your file. Border guards can also question a trip that does not match your visa.

How long does a Schengen visa take from Pakistan?

The legal limit is 15 calendar days from an admissible application, extendable to 45 days. Germany says its short stay visas usually take about 14 calendar days, longer in peak season. Waiting for an appointment adds time, so apply as early as six months before travel and never later than 15 days before.

Can I work on a Schengen visit visa?

No. A Schengen visit visa covers tourism, family visits and business meetings, not employment. Working without the right permit can lead to removal and future refusals. Via Nova does not arrange jobs, job offers or work visas.

Can I get a multiple entry Schengen visa from Pakistan?

Possibly. Under the Visa Code, applicants who lawfully used three visas within two years can receive a one year multiple entry visa, then two years, then five. Consulates can adapt these rules to local conditions, and they can issue shorter visas when they have doubts. A clean travel record is the best way to qualify.
