To study abroad from Pakistan, choose a country that fits your budget and grades, get admission and the document its study visa needs (I-20, CAS, letter of acceptance, CoE or admission letter), prove your funds and English, then apply online. As of October 2026, Germany is cheapest on tuition, while the USA, Canada and Australia give the longest work periods after graduating.

Which country should you choose to study abroad from Pakistan?

The right country depends on what your family can show in the bank, your grades, whether you want to bring family, and your plans after graduating. Every figure below comes from the official or university pages under Sources, checked in October 2026.

What is the study visa process from Pakistan, step by step?

The order is the same for every country. Only the details change.

  1. Choose a country and course that follows from your past study or work.
  2. Take the tests your university asks for, usually English, and the GRE or SAT for some US programmes.
  3. Apply to universities before their deadlines.
  4. Get the admission document: an I-20 (USA), a CAS (UK), a letter of acceptance plus a PAL unless exempt (Canada), a Confirmation of Enrolment (Australia), an admission letter (Germany) or a letter of acceptance showing fees paid (Ireland).
  5. Arrange and document your funds, including where the money came from.
  6. Prepare Pakistani documents: passport, Matric, Intermediate and degree records, a NADRA Family Registration Certificate for sponsors, and police or medical checks where asked.
  7. Apply online and give biometrics.
  8. Attend the interview or appointment where there is one.
  9. Travel within the entry rules of your visa.

Most students start about a year before their intake. Our guide on how to apply for a study visa from Pakistan explains each step, and the study visa documents checklist puts every country's list in one table.

How much does it cost to study abroad, and how do you fund it?

Plan for three layers: government fees, the funds the visa requires, and the real cost of tuition and living.

Government visa fees as of October 2026: USA $185 plus the $350 SEVIS fee; UK £558 plus a £776 Immigration Health Surcharge for each year; Canada CAD 150 plus CAD 85 biometrics; Australia from AUD 2,500; Germany €75; Ireland €60, plus €300 registration after arrival.

How the money must look. The UK wants funds held for 28 days in a row, ending within 31 days of your application. Canada's Islamabad visa office asks for 12 months of statements, Ireland for six months, and Germany for a blocked account. Australia also accepts parents' income of at least AUD 87,856 shown in official tax assessments. Explain every large deposit. Our guides to the bank statement for a study visa and the sponsor letter cover parents as sponsors.

Which English test do you need for a study visa?

Visa rules and university rules are separate, and you must meet both.

  • USA and Canada: the visa rules name no test, so your university decides. Canada's post graduation work permit needs a test later.
  • UK: degree courses need CEFR B2. Your university can assess it, but where a test is required it must be a SELT such as IELTS for UKVI or PTE Academic UKVI.
  • Australia: an approved score for the visa itself, such as IELTS Academic 6.0 or PTE Academic 47 for tests taken from 7 August 2025. Fully online tests and Duolingo are not accepted.
  • Germany: proof of language skills in the language of instruction.
  • Ireland: an accepted certificate, such as IELTS Academic 5.0, Duolingo 75 or PTE Academic 30 for degrees.

In Pakistan, IELTS on computer costs PKR 75,600 or 76,240 at IDP depending on the city, and PTE Academic costs USD 240 (October 2026). Check your score with our IELTS band score calculator or PTE to IELTS score converter, and read IELTS vs PTE for a study visa or study visa without IELTS. Our English test preparation classes cover IELTS, PTE and TOEFL.

Can you study abroad with a low CGPA, after FSc, a study gap or a 14 year degree?

Usually yes, but each narrows your choices differently.

  • Low CGPA. Northumbria lists CGPA 2.5 for master's courses needing a UK 2:2, and Swinburne in Australia lists 2.0 with a four year bachelor's for many master's courses. Germany is strict. See study abroad with a low CGPA.
  • After FSc. US and Canadian institutions accept the Intermediate for bachelor's entry. Many UK, Australian and Irish universities want a foundation year unless your marks are high, and Germany needs a year of university in Pakistan or a Studienkolleg. See study visa after FSc.
  • Study gap. None of the six governments publishes a maximum gap. Show evidence of what you did, such as employment letters. See study gap accepted countries.
  • 14 year degree. A two year BA, BSc or associate degree alone rarely qualifies for a master's, though many universities accept it followed by a two year master's. DAAD Pakistan asks for 16 years. See is a 14 year bachelor's accepted.
  • Spouse. The USA allows an F2 spouse, Canada and Germany allow it under conditions, and the UK, Australia and Ireland limit family mostly to research or sponsored students. See spouse on a student visa.

None of these six countries sets a maximum age for a study visa, as our age limit guide explains.

Which countries hold a study visa interview, and what happens after a refusal?

CountryInterviewIf you are refused

When should you apply for 2027 intakes?

Starting in October 2026, you are on time for most 2027 intakes, but some deadlines are weeks away.

IntakeKey dates
USA, Fall 2027Master's deadlines from November 2026 to early 2027, such as Carnegie Mellon Computer Science on 9 December 2026. Visa stage May to July 2027. See Fall 2027 USA deadlines
UK, September 2027UCAS deadline 13 January 2027 for most courses. Many master's courses admit on a rolling basis. CAS and visa June to August 2027. See the UK September 2027 timeline
Canada, September 2027Toronto and UBC close international undergraduate applications on 15 January 2027. See the Canada September 2027 timeline
Australia, 2027February and July starts, such as 22 February and 26 July 2027 at the University of Queensland
Germany, winter 2027/28Non EU deadlines usually 15 January to 15 July 2027. See the winter semester 2027 guide
Ireland, September 2027Apply for the visa up to 3 months before travel; decisions take about 8 weeks

One US rule to watch: a DHS rule published on 17 July 2026 would end "duration of status" for F1 students. A federal court in Massachusetts postponed it on 14 September 2026, and the government appealed on 30 September. Until the courts decide, F1 students keep the current rules. Our guide to new US student visa rules in 2026 tracks the case.

How do you choose a study abroad consultant in Pakistan?

Every country takes applications online, so a consultant is optional. If you use one, check three things before you pay: a registered business with an office you can visit, a written scope with fees and refund terms, and a refusal to promise a visa. Walk away from anyone offering a guaranteed visa, a paid German appointment or a "job offer". For Canada, only a licensed RCIC, a Canadian lawyer or a Quebec notary may charge for immigration advice. The FIA takes complaints about fake agents on helpline 1991. Our guide on how to choose a study visa consultant has the full checklist.

Frequently asked questions

Which country is best to study abroad from Pakistan?

No country is best for everyone. Germany suits a tight tuition budget and a strong, closely related degree. The UK and Ireland suit students who want a one year master's. The USA, Canada and Australia give the longest work periods after graduating, and the USA lets an F2 spouse come with you. Match the country to your grades, funds and family plans, not to a ranking.

How much money do I need to study abroad from Pakistan?

It depends on the country. As of October 2026, the visa funds are €10,000 a year plus fees for Ireland, €11,904 in a German blocked account, £10,539 for nine months outside London plus UK fees, CAD 23,448 plus tuition and travel for Canada, and AUD 29,710 plus tuition and travel for Australia. For the USA, you show the first year cost on your I-20.

Can I study abroad without IELTS from Pakistan?

Often, but rarely without any proof of English. US and Canadian universities set their own rules, UK universities can assess English themselves for degree courses, and Ireland accepts Duolingo for the visa. Australia is the strictest, because most Pakistani students need an approved test score for the visa itself. Check every university on your list before you skip a test.

Can I study abroad after FSc?

Yes. With FSc, ICS, ICom or FA you can apply for a bachelor's in the USA or Canada directly. Many UK, Australian and Irish universities ask for a foundation year first unless your marks are high. Germany needs a year of university study in Pakistan or a Studienkolleg. Your certificates may need IBCC equivalence if a university asks.

Is there an age limit to study abroad?

No. None of the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany or Ireland sets a maximum age for a study visa as of October 2026. Age matters elsewhere: students under 18 need parental consent, some scholarships set limits, and Australia's graduate work visa is for applicants aged 35 or under.

How long does the study abroad process take from Pakistan?

Plan for about a year from choosing a course to flying. The visa stage varies: the UK's usual decision time from outside the UK is 3 weeks, Ireland's is about 8 weeks, and the State Department's table of 17 September 2026 showed US student interviews about 1 to 2 months away. Germany publishes no processing time.
